I worry that if they don't expand they will continue to go from a brewery that made many styles to an IPA factory.

They seem to be going hard with the milkshake IPAs and other IPA recipes. Looking at the website they've had like 4 non-IPAs in cans. I guess that's what sells, but no way am i going to pick up that stuff.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, I think you're in the minority when it comes to traveling to a brewery to pick-up IPAs.

Also, it seems like Mystic's distro has picked up quite a bit over the last 6 months. I purchase most of my beer at Vinnin in Swampscott and Mystic is available semiregularly.

I do really like thier IPAs. Much more I wish they kept a bit truer to what they had been. I was a regular for years and a frequent visitor even after moving to the north shore and then to NH. I haven't been since they joined the monoculture and the draft list became homogenous. I still support them but would like to see a better balance.

I'm also bummed about this. It seems like they've even stopped putting out the barrel aged stuff lately, which is super weird to me. They put out a 2016 vintage of Ventus but not a '17, or '18 as of yet.

I meant more that i wouldnt pick up their IPAs in general, but yea i dont think i'll be going to the brewery either. Last time i did i was delayed by the metal scrapyard and people getting out of their cars to fist fight. Going to Tree House has been easier than going to Chelsea.
I do really love their can and bottle art, but i havent seen much of them in stores except for their IPAs and table beer.

Seems they’re looking for a head brewer. Not sure if that means anything about anything related to the expansion.

Really? I have never had a problem getting to their brewery. I usually go by them when I go to the airport rather than pay the toll (I also stop in at Mystic or the other breweries in the area). When the casino opens on the other hand I'm not sure how easy it will be to get to that area.

I'm still hoping to see some sort of expansion from them and also hoping the expansion will give them the ability to add a little more variety into their lineup. They obviously need to brew what sells to make money but I would love to see some more beers like Day of Doom or other styles.

Anyone know what’s going on over there? They used to release a new IPA every Friday, but haven’t in a few weeks. They also don’t have any IPAs on tap at the brewery. I saw they were looking for a head brewer, so maybe that’s it????

Tropical Chelsea is a special one...I hate comparing to other breweries but this is a dead ringer for a top shelf Treehouse...if someone told me I was drinking a King Julius I would believe it. Bubblegum, mangoes, super soft.

It's still crazy to me that a brewery that didn't really touch IPA's just one day said "yeah we can do that too" and started churning out some of the best neipa in the state.

I agree, this is julius...maybe a little sweeter and a little more abv...that's why I'm baffled by the low ratings on guy gave this a 2.5 and Julius a 5 a few days apart. Please brew more Mystic

Wouldn’t it be better the other way around? If it had a lower ABV and tasted like a double?

While I do love Mystic’s IPAs, it would be cool to see someone create something new or the “next big thing” rather than “crack the Julius code”.

Nah. While I like a good session beer, sometimes I just want to sip one beer and tie on a nice buzz. DIPAs have a place in my drinking regimen.
The flavor profile of Tropical Chelsea is an anomaly in the IPAs they’ve released so far. I feel like their IPAs, this one notwithstanding, stand out among (and above) the other local NEIPA producers (Trillium, Tree House, Idle Hands, etc.). I appreciate that they are continuing to experiment with their IPA line, rather than develop a house recipe and then just switch out hops. No knock on the Position series, love those. Just glad they do more.

To me the three things that make Julius are the mouthfeel, the immediate taste, and the lingering hop taste. I've had other beers that remind me of Julius and maybe they hit one or two of those. Even Tree House seems to have a hard time hitting all three these days as they continue to adjust to the volumes they make of their beers. I had the King Julius from April of this year and felt like it was a bit light on the third piece. What truly struck me though was the mouthfeel that no one really hits. I'm hoping to get my hands on some of this before its all gone.

In truth though Tree House reportedly doesn't use oats to get their unique mouthfeel, though I guess who cares?

Yeahhh I know I know.. I just tend to skew towards glass half empty with these things and assume the anonymous raters are just hazebois who are on the Mystic bandwagon now and have never appreciated or even tried a Table Beer for the amazing beer that it is. Or a good pils, or Aventinus, or SNPA, anything other than IPAs and pastry stouts. However, palates and subjectivity aside, Tropical is for sure one of the best hoppy offerings they have come out with.

Went to a Mystic beer event at Babbo in Fort Point last night. Learned some cool things:

Tropical Chelsea is a blend of mosaic, galaxy, citra.

Grandma's Lemonade was originally brewed for the tasting and was going to be Limencello Frappe, but it didn't come out as they were hoping so they meddled a whole bunch with it, along with adding cherries.

All of their frappes use real ingredients vs. extracts or juice. Fancy!

The last beer we had was Entropy, their barleywine which I've never had. This year I was lucky and got a bottle of HF Aaron... I think Entropy was better. Way less sweet, much more tobacco and raisins.

All in all a pretty fun event

Grandma's lemonade was bad, wish they didnt push it out at $20/ 4 pk if it wasn't as intended. It tasted like a tart dry hopped milkshake IPA shandy.

Tropical Chelsea is so close to Julius. The added oats mean it's not really "cracking the code" but man it's close.

That said, I hope that doesn't mean Mystic continues to aim for TH moving forward because of it. I much prefer they put out more things like Renaud or Cranes or Entropy.

Have you tried any beer from Oxbow? I visited their taproom this weekend for the first time up in Portland and it reminded me of what Mystic used to be. I still love Mystic and will likely stop there today on the way to the airport but was really impressed with my visit up to Oxbow.

Got a chance to try Tropical Chelsea on Monday. From a straight taste perspective it was very Julius like and it was very good. To me it did not crack the mouth feel or the hoppiness that Julius has (at least the old small batch versions of Julius, I haven't had Julius from the new brewery but have had King Julius). After you have Julius there's a lingering hoppy flavor that I didn't find Tropical Chelsea to have. I didn't find the recent King Julius to have that old lingering hoppy flavor to be honest but it did have an incredible mouth feel that Chelsea did not have. I've never been big on mouthfeel so I don't think that really matters but I was amazed to notice the mouthfeel the last time I drank KJ. So just my 2 cents

Well people keep lamenting that Mystic is so IPA focused these days but Day of Doom has been available at their brewery since September 15th and there's still a lot of availability. I was happy since I had the chance to buy it last night but its also a little frustrating to see them release something non IPA and it just sits there.

Oh i definitely want to pick up Day of Doom, and if i see it in a bottle shop i probably will.
I dont see anywhere on their website that says how much it costs and i would kind of hate to get there to find it's like $10 for one bottle. Also the timing just hasnt worked out for me to drive up to Chelsea.

It costs $12. Its a cork and cage 12.68 fl. oz bottle. For a small batch Quad I don't think that's outrageously priced. I think its around 11.5% ABV. I had the 2017 and it was an excellent example of a quad and am looking forward to the 2018 version. Its certainly not cheap by any means but its priced generally in the area I would expect.

I'd agree it's not overpriced but it's definitely priced where i would only buy one, and one bottle doesnt really motivate me to go out of my way to their brewery.

I agree a single beer isn't necessarily enough to get out to the brewery if you aren't in the area. I live an hour away and only stopped in because I was coming back from the airport and I go that way to avoid the toll. I guess what I find interesting is that a blueberry frappe IPA will sell out quicker than a quad. Maybe its not all that surprising to the average beer drinking person who understands what a blueberry, frappe, and IPA are but has no idea what a quad is and why they should want it. I do wish they would make more saison's and grissettes again.
