This doesn’t apply to this group, because I’m not sending this beer to @jonphisher, and it isn’t new to me (thank the beer godz).

But this is my “beer nerds who really, REALLY enjoy good beer” group, and a good story, so I’m sharing this. I drove to Pittsburgh today for a 4-day work trip that’ll take me to Pittsburgh, then Cleveland and Columbus OH.

Yes, it’s good to be traveling freely again, because it’s easier to sell stuff face-to-face - and it supports my beer nerd habit, especially for new beer acquisitions. But I had this beer (sent by an East coast friend that doesn’t play on BA), so I decided to bring a couple of cans, which led to the following exchange with my better half this morning:

Joy: Why do you need the cooler?

ovaltine: I’m taking a couple of beers to enjoy this evening.

Joy: Why? You’ll go out to eat, you can have beer when you eat.

ovaltine: I’m going to eat at the hotel, so I’ll have the beers, then eat. Save the company some money (not said - and have a WORLD CLASS beer).

Joy: (pause) You spend WAAAAAY too much time thinking about beer.

ovaltine: (shocked look) I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Joy: (disgusted look, walks away muttering profanities)

She knew what she signed up for. So I have two thoughts about this scenario, as seen in this pic:

    1. John Kimmich is correct (of course), drink this from the can. It retains SO MUCH of that magnificent dank hoppiness. Plus, I had no other choice, other than drinking it from a plastic cup. And that is uncivilized.

    2. The inventor of the Igloo Playmate cooler should win the Nobel prize. IJS.

These are going down WAAAAY too easy. If I’m not careful, Imma end up like this (saw them opening up for Alice Cooper a couple of weeks ago in a 2,500 seat theater, and they ROCKED) …..

Clear, bright amber body; excellent looking carbonation; huge, billowy head, white and dense. Nice cereal grain scent right off; toasted malt; warm bread crust. Warm, toasty flavor; honey; mild to moderate hop bitterness. Medium body; smooth and velvety; gentle warmth throughout the tasting experience; slightly sticky on the palate.

A warm, delightful, toasty, smooth beer from Fox Farm.

...lager smooth, warm and toasty flavor...crushable...I'm liking this one a lot...

At the FedEx I used to use, I once used a wine box.Told them it was glass and ceramic art ( what I always tell them), and nope, can't ship alcohol. But it's not alcohol. Nope.

Went home, unpacked the box, opened it along the seam, turned it inside out, taped the seam from the inside, repacked it, covered the outside in more clear packaging tape than is imaginable, and took the sucker back.

Great box sir! We just can't ship alcohol.

    SMH!

Well, the box contained zero Grolsch. You get a guy’s hopes up, and then… nada.

To compound the disappointment, @snaotheus seemed to think it fitting to substitute the Grolsch with a large oddly shaped black blob. I know things are different on the West Coast, but…

All jokes aside, I’ve been hit with stellar box from Ryan filled with 100% new to me beers, and several new to me breweries. The bottles:

    Pfriem Nectarine Golden Ale
    Pfriem Bosbessen Barrel Aged Ale
    E9 Blue Gold
    Ale Apothecary Tumalo Kriek
    De Garde The Qi

And the cans and the much needed Toque. (It’s been snowing here since 3PM):

    Ruebens Crikey IPA
    Georgetown Bodhizafa IPA
    Fremont Lush IPA
    Fremont Neon Fortress Italian Pils
    Rueben’s Crush the Groove IPA
Fremont Head Full of Dynamite IPA
    Holy Mountain Black Beer
    Rueben’s Wolfsburg Helles.

Thanks Ryan! I can’t wait to dig in!

I had promised a Montreal themed LIF by the end of the weekend, and I dropped the ball. I’m picking it up again now.

A trade partner is visiting Toronto for a couple weeks, arriving later this week. He is carting somewhere between 2 and 3 dozen cans of Montreal made beers with him from some of the best, new-ish breweries in the city. Would any of you like a box with some Montreal beers ( as well as some other stuff to fill it out)? Then please answer these questions. I will ask him the same questions. The participant with the most answers in common with my mule gets the prize!

A couple things about him: he is in his late 30s, has lived his whole life in the city, and is perfectly bilingual. He likes all styles of beers, but prefers sours/wilds and flavoured stouts. There are some hints in this list. What are his answers to these questions I’ve asked him:

    1. Who is your all-time favourite Montreal Expos player?

    2. Other than basic poutine, what is your favourite ‘classic variant’ that is commonly available (poutine hot dog, poutine smoked meat, galvaude, or poutine Michigan)?

    3. What is your favourite Montreal brewery?

In case it is needed, here is a tie breaker.

Tie Breaker: Only once have I caught a foul ball at an Expos game. It was against a division rival in 1993. What team was that?

Note, this box will be IPA and Lager heavy.

    3. Brasserie Dieu du Ciel!

Tiebreaker: Based on the first post I found Googling, the Expos didn't have any rivalries. So I'm gonna say the Mets!

My first foray into @snaotheus box of Grolsch.

Reuben’s Wolfsburg Helles Lager. As an owner of a couple of Volkswagens - one manufactured in Wolfsburg - this beer spoke to me. As disconcerting as this was, I am unfamiliar with the speech patterns of Washington state beer, and took this banter with a grain of salt.

Pours a bright straw gold with a moderate foamy head that dissipates slowly. Negligible lacing as the beer is imbibed.

Lovely grassy and slightly floral aromas jump out up front. Cereal notes slip in behind.

The grassy notes also dominate on the tongue. Some lingering floral notes and lightly toasted grain follow. I really like the grassy quality of this beer.

Medium bodied. Maybe a little more than that. Quite substantial for what I expect. Moderate carbonation.

This was a great Helles with a little more body than I expect and great grassy notes. It isn’t Grolsch, but what are you going to do?
