Sounds better than getting hit in the balls by an angry beer

 

New Beer Wednesday thanks to @Ozzylizard: Hoppin' Frog's Dark Hoppy Shadow, a 15.1% "Belgian Intercontinental Black IPA." No fingers or testicles were harmed in the transport or reception of this beer (AFAIK).

16oz can served in a tulip. This beer has traveled backwards in time. It is specifically and very legibly dated "CANNED ON MAY 31 2025."

Pours black, with about two centimeters of dense, light tan head, that settles into a very even, thick skin that covers the surface of the beer and climbs about a centimeter up the side of the glass. Smell is roasty, pine resin bitterness, nutty, burnt toffee.

Taste is unexpected. First sip is very sweet. Molasses, maybe some maple syrup, maybe a little chocolate syrup. There is a definite roasty character, with the sweetness makes me think of coffee with a lot of sugar added. Burnt toffee, char, a bit of anise, again mostly hiding behind the sweetness. Which is weird, because I'm making it sound like overwhelming, cloying sweetness, but it's not. It does dominate, but it is not overwhelming. All the non-sweet flavors are ganging up on it together and almost holding their own.

Mouthfeel is rich, velvety, and smooth. Overall, I'm really enjoying this, but I think it falls outside of the bounds of the Black IPA style by quite a bit. I suspect that's the brewer's intent, and I really enjoy the beer, so I'm not going to knock it for that. I think it would be more correctly lumped under a vague style like Strong Ale or even American Barleywine.

As already confirmed, it was a box from @JayORear that got lost for a couple months. However, I made an attempt to replace the broken bottle since I had access to it and Jay had moved across the country or something. Wasn't it Moksa Nutterzzzzz or something? Which was obviously hilarious given the situation (and our juvenile senses of humor).

However when my replacement box arrived, the bottle had mysteriously disappeared from the box that was delivered by Fedex... but everything else was there. That bottle was just cursed apparently.

 

OK, I am starting off Mystery Beer #1 from @FBarber .She's tall, like taller than a tall boy.
Golden amber in hue, capped by a bountiful fluff. Slow retreat leaves some scattered, clumpy lacing. She's pretty.
Nose pops off with a sweet note first. Reminds me of a solid DIPA, like Knuckle Sandwich from my hometown brewery, Bootleggers. But immediately after I get some nice hints of what I am feeling are Citra and/or Centennial hops, earthy and floral. But some hint of pepper or rye as well.
Flavor is a tad modest compared to the nose, but really nice. Still getting a nice malt backbone. Again an earthy, resiny hop contribution akin to Chinook starts things off but maybe some Citra and Centennial bring a bit of citrus zest.
Mouthfeel is smooth, mild carbonation, and a smooth, drying bitterness on the back end...

Going to continue sipping. As of now, I am guessing it's a DIPA.

3F Zombie Ice! A Double Pale Ale. And now I am starting to feel the 18.2 oz of 8.5%.

Thanks @FBarber I haven't had anything from 3F in a while, and this was quite tasty and right up my alley.

 

Wanted to get this up here before too much more time passed. This bruiser of a third box, with some heavy-hitter BA bottles, came from @colts9016 a couple of days ago, and I just haven't had the time to post. Lots of killer stuff here, including what I assume is a mystery crowler, with an acronym on the side I can't decipher. Thanks, Jammin! Looking forward to diving into these in coming days!

Good day fellow BIFfoons! Another New Breakfast Beer from @2beerdogs and NBW BIF 17:



The Mariner, from Coronado Brewing Company x Societe Brewing Company. 16 fl oz can from @2beerdogs in NBW BIF 17. Reviewed 27/04/23 (Review 3084). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “02/27/23”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 45.5 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 53.9 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), clear.
Body – Pale Gold (SRM 4), hazy. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, translucent.
Head: Large (Maximum 5 cm, aggressive center pour), white, medium density, average retention, rapidly retreating, leaving a 0.8 – 2.0 cm crown with a torn curtain upper rim and a heaped rocky partial layer.
Lacing – Marvelous! Looks like a volcano belching a smoke cloud! Toward the end, torn curtain lacing.
Aroma – 3.5 – Flowers and perfume, some mint, no malt, no yeast. No ethanol (8 % ABV as marked on the label) aroma.
Flavor – 3.5 – Doesn’t follow the nose. Semi-sweet with not much flavor – I’d call it a very ghostly tropical mélange. No malt, yeast, or ethanol. No gastric warming. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Medium; juicy; soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 While the aroma is not particularly offensive, it does resemble some air freshener, not at all the advertised “floral aromas of citrus and pineapple”. The flavor does hint at the description “tropical stone fruit”. Interesting but not one I’d care to repeat.
