What Bevis said above is correct - a beer container that is designed to be sealed for a reasonable time is likely to have pretty fizzy contents. However, the stirring method mentioned would be a good way of getting rid of excess carbonation. Alternatively you could just crack a brew and let it sit for 5-10 minutes (if you can wait that long).

You mention York, which is where I live. If you want proper cask ale to take home, the York Beer & Wine shop in Fishergate sells growlers filled from a handpump. No idea what beers or price - I think they usually have only one on at a time. See http://www.yorkbeerandwineshop.co.uk/beershop Site/contents.html

Pivni (near the market) also does take-away beer. Happy hunting....

NITRO is an abomination. End of.

I didn't know about the Beer & Wine shop, I'll definitely check it out. How long would the beer keep? And I agree, I've tried several nitro beers this week and while I like the texture, the flavor is extremely lacking...

I'm not sure how long a growler keeps as I've never had one, but it's likely to be only a few days (in the fridge). When the growler is filled the beer will be exposed to oxygen, so it will begin to slowly deteriorate from that point on. Perhaps someone else with more experience will chime in....

A few days should be fine. I'll definitely check it out.

The beers that you can see in supermarket that come in boxes with taps that say "draught" or "cask" ale - are those actual cask ales? Or can you only buy proper casks in specialized stores.

Just ordered some beers online there, they dont use PayPal so I was kind of wary but they seemed to be a legitimate off license to me (Called McHugh's from Dublin). I still am not prepared to pay £14 postage so I found the site when looking for an irish site to buy off and luckily found them.

    I ordered these:

    Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast
Wild Beer Co. Wildebeest Imperial Stout
    Mikkeller Milk Stout
