Greetings and welcome to another NBS. There are a few big events taking place today; Superbowl Sunday and Groundhog day.

In Sun Prairie WI(my hometown) Jimmy the groundhog saw his shadow, so we will have another 6 more weeks of winter. I’d prefer it to warm up in March, so maybe I’ll get lucky.

In Punxsutawney PA, Phil also saw his shadow today, so I guess folks out East are in for 6 more weeks of winter as well.

Matt bestowed this honor on me today as he is visiting the Magic Kingdom with his family! I hope he has a blast with his kids at Disney, while I host the NBS thread!

Today is the day and this is the thread to share a beer that's NEW to you. Please TRY your new beer and SHARE your thoughts here. Let us know the aromas that tickle your olfactory and the flavors that dance on your palate. Linked reviews are respected, pictures always please; add any other items to round out your new beer adventures today.

    Make it a great NBS!

I held off posting this because I couldn't remember your name, dammit! Please forgive.

Anywho, it's cold today in Casper but this coming week will make today look like a day to sun bathe...

Cheers to all the followers of N.B.S.!

    Greetings, all :grinning:

Spring-like weather again - bodes well for a mild Superbowl setting tonight.
Go 'Hawks, BTW (though I'm not overly invested ).

My PC went down yesterday, which was pretty stressful, but I'm making due with the wife's laptop.
This is the empty hole in my life :slight_frown::
Upside is that it provided me with the opportunity to clean-up my cords and cables and do some intensive cleaning of my desk area this morning (*dust bunnies galore*)...:stuck_out_tongue:

Trying out a new release from Smuttynose - their Smuttlabs brew, Pure Biss
    [IMG]
Advertised as "an unconventional wit beer (sic)"
Brewed with kaffir limes, spruce tips, and grapefruit zest
(as opposed to the more traditional coriander and orange peel).
Delicious actually - all the ingredients come forward, creating an IPA/witbier hybrid- real easy drinkin' :sunglasses:

That's my only new brew for today, so I'll leave you with this tune, and wishes for a great NBS and SBS ...

    Cheers!

Happy New Beer Sunday and holy moly the game is today! Bon chance everyone and may the best team win. ( Really may the best team pass and block and kick and tackle and throw down the opposition into the dirt and stomp all over them . . . ok I'm fine)

Today I have Lagunitas Sucks and this is one of the most hyped beers of the season. I like it but it seems to me like I am missing something. It drinks very lightly and almost with a clear palate by the time you are done. The malt is like a small taste of cane sugar and spectacular in the mouthfeel. The nose was a bit shy too. It tastes great and is so easy to drink.

Happy New Stout Super Bowl Sunday!

I've been seeing this beer on the forums a lot lately; bought a 4-pack; and figured Super Bowl morning/early afternoon was as good a time as any to try it out. I know it's supposed to be hoppy as heck, but the rest of the new beers I have lined up for today are just as hoppy (e.g. Hi-Res), so I'm not concerned.

Huge, huge pink grapefruit and overall hoppy aroma. Is this really going to go the way of a black IPA?

In fact, no! It's a very tasty stout. The hops are present, but far more strong in the aroma than in the flavor. Very well done.

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/1013/?ba=Roguer

If you have a team in this game, best of luck to you. For the rest of us, let's just hope for a really good game!

Some melancholy melodies to get the day going.

    Cheers!

Cheers all! It's been quite a while since I last drank this early in the day. Figured I should start off right, coffee in the cup... or some approximation thereof, anyway.
Starting with the obvious: I'm very excited for the sportsing game this evening. This marks only the third time in my life that one of my hometown teams have had the opportunity to play for all the marbles, and hopefully will represent the first time they've actually come home with them (sorry Lauren Jackson, you may be superlative, but WNBA doesn't really count for these purposes. And I don't REALLY follow hockey, so we can just forget about that series that instigated rioting in Vancouver).
There was a light dusting of snow this morning that I was all prepared to go shovel off the front walk, until the woman I share an apartment with laughed away the notion (I've never lived somewhere where snow shoveling was an issue, so I didn't realize that a light dusting is not shovel-worthy), so it's back to studying where babies come from (get your mind out of the gutter: OB/Maternity!) and, since it IS SuperBowl Sunday, joining you lovely folks earlier in the day than is my custom.

Cheers all, drink well, and Go Hawks!

Have it two or three times. I wasn't blown away by it the first go, and then the second bottle just hit me. No idea why, but I was like, "What on Earth was I missing before? This is great!" Maybe the hype had raised my expectations too much at first. ::shrug::

It's been a busy morning and now that I am back home I can share my new beer. Another one of the Toppling Goliath XHOPs APA series. The Orange is the 5th in the series of singled hopped experimental beers. It is light, refreshing, with notes of tropical mango, sweet tangerine, and bitter grapefruit. The sweet malts are subdued, but help balance it out a bit. Tasty as always.

Man, I really hate to be negative because I've really enjoyed all of the Victory beers I've been discovering lately, but this one I'm not overly fond of. Maybe I expected it to be like DirtWolf - which I absolutely LOVE - but this ain't DirtWolf. Since they already have DirtWolf I guess they didn't need to make another one.

I find the taste to muted and "musty" (sorry, can't come up with a better word).

For imperial IPA's I've liked Southern Tier UnEarthly and SN Hoptimum, I don't think this one stands up to those.

    It is powerful at 9.n%.

I will drink the other three, it's not that bad... but I won't get it again, I'll get DirtWolf... or UnEarthly or Hoptimum...

I felt the same way. I see what other people like in Hop Ranch, but it's just not for me. Especially when DirtWolf is available year-round. That's a solid, solid DIPA. (And then there's Resin, ST 2XIPA, and so many other available DIPAs at good prices).

Man, now I can't wait for Hoptimum. :stuck_out_tongue:

New American Malt Liquor Sunday (Really)

    Greetings NBSer's,

Hey, it's winter here in SCMN. Highs predicted all week in the teens or single digits and lows most nights below zero. February I can get through, there will be longer days, some early budding and more song birds. It's March that really sucks, but I'll wait until then to really start complaining.

Okay, so today I really am doing a cheap malt liquor. I should note that I have a fondness for big lagers. Remember the trend a few years back of "Imperial Pils"? Well, I dug that, even though they tend to be kinda' hard to find now. So, I'm left with cheap malt liquor occasionally and I will give them a go.
This really isn't as terrible as I thought it might be. Would I recommend it? Only if someone likes this style.
Anyway I'll be back next week with a more typical selection. Until then, enjoy Super Bowl Sunday and all I hope for is a great game.

    New American ESB Sunday

Greetings to the NBS gang from the Jersey Shore ! The weather has turned mild ( more about that in one of the pics that follow) for this Super Bowl Sunday held here in NJ. Exit 82 on the Garden State Parkway, where I am, is far enough away from exit 16 on the NJ Turnpike, where the game is, so that means things are nice and quiet locally. No game day mayhem, thankfully. All those woes about the cold weather site for the game...and the mercury sits at 52 degrees. Perfect football weather in NJ today.
Time to get down to NBS business and this nice surprise from Left Hand Brewing:

New SuperBowl Sunday beer week! Though I'm really very upset at the passing of one of my favorite actors, Philip Seymour Hoffman. He died this morning of an apparent drug overdose, at the way-too-fucking-young age of 46. RIP Mr. Hoffman, I already miss you.

In his honor, here's my new review:

Hey all, happy super NBS! This will be my only beer today as I'm watching the game with people who don't drink for religous reasons. :confused Nice people but... Have one for me guys.

Anyway, its unseasonably warm so I'm enjoying this one outside during the little guys nap. This has been on NBS a lot lately, including today. I'm really enjoying this, but I agree that Dirt Wolf (despite the name) is quite a bit better.

Wow actually warm enough to rain here, luckily held off while I was going crazy at work helping folks who have saved their recycling items for a warmer day, namely today. Now a thirst demands a refreshing beer, and for me a hoppy beer is refreshing like I enjoy to drink, and this baby has hoppiness to a staggering degree. Truth in advertising with this one haha. Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

I wasn't planning on making this such a New Stout Sunday, but after I decided to stay in for the big game, this beer seemed to be calling my name.

I'm not super impressed with this right now. Huge, huge coffee bite - reminiscent of FBS, for sure. I'm leaving the review as-is, but if it opens up significantly as it warms, then I'll go back and re-work the review for the sake of fairness.
