So apparently some time in September a new WOB is opening up in Stone Oak. It states it will carry 50 rotating drafts and 500 bottled beers. Has anyone ever been to a WOB before? Curious to know what type of atmosphere to expect. Also curious to know if it's worth the commute as I currently reside about 1.5 miles from The Flying Saucer. Overall, it sounds like a great addition to the growing San Antonio beer scene.

    Are they from Florida?

I have no idea but I would presume so bc many of their locations are based in Florida. Anyone who has any input please feel free to enlighten us. Thanks!

Right - Florida chain. We got one in DFW around the first of the year. I really need to go back... but my first impressions were that they weren't particularly in touch with the Texas beer scene - but this seems to have changed as the emails I get from them indicate that they are really trying to feature local beers. The biggest beating is that they were overpriced compared to Saucer, etc. They have all these weekly special nights (service employee night, teacher night, etc) where they offer really good deals, but I say forget all that crap and just lower your pints from $7 to $5 and I'd try to get over there more often. If you're within an easy commute of Flying Saucer I can't see any advantage to driving extra mileage to WOB. I found the atmosphere lacking compared to Saucer, but Ft Worth has a great Saucer compared to others I've been to.

Should also mention that their initial projection for opening the DFW location turned out to be off by several months - they said August but grand opening wasn't until January - so I wouldn't hold my breath on their September forecast.

Thanks for your input Coldriver! My two biggest concerns were exactly what you mentioned. First that they aren't exactly in touch with the local Texas beer scene. Secondly, that they would have overpriced beer that should fit in with the Stone Oak crowd. I may go once or twice just for the experience but will continue to make Flying Saucer my regular watering hole.

Glad to help Grendle, you can read my review of the DFW (Arlington) location as well http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/27746/view=beerfly. Granted, I think it has improved since I've been - especially in terms of featuring Texas beers. But, the fact that my review is still the one and only eight months later would seem to indicate it's still not a favorite of BA's.

That was a great review Coldriver but as you mentioned the only one. Speaks volumes for the local BA's. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards my regular spots of: Flying Saucer, Friendly Spot, Freetails, Filling Station and Yardhouse.

Just some basic info for y'all: All WOBs are owned by different franchise groups, so although we have similar standards, every WOB group is different. Our staff goes through an intensive 14 day beer school and we pride ourselves on our customer service skills & product knowledge. We are set for an opening date in late Sept.

We do carry beer from around the world, but we have a ton of American Craft beer as well as a large section of our coolers dedicated to Texas brews. We've been in touch with every local brewery and will carry everything from Jester King, Live Oak, Rahr & Sons, Real Ale, Ranger Creek, (512), and more.

We will also have an entire cooler dedicated to New Arrivals & seasonal selections so you will always have plenty of options to choose from. All 50 of our taps will be rotating so you never know what you might find.

Hopefully that helps, check us out on Facebook for up to date info and we hope to meet y'all out at our opening.

I'll be giving it a couple of shots but it will be a rare indulgence for me because I will be running past Flying Saucer and Freetail on the way there. When the need for a beer grips a man, he needs it right at that moment. And that need grips me any time I am passing anywhere remotely close to Flying Saucer or Freetail.

Got to take a pre-opening tour of WoB SA today. Should be open in a few weeks. I got to see the opening night tap list. Looks good to me. Nothing too crazy, but Lots of stuff I haven't seen in draft in SA before. I'm looking forward to opening night.

I just glanced at the list and I don't know if it is set in stone, but there were several Austin/Dallas/Houston brewers that I recognized. Sounds like they plan to have rotating taps so there's always something different. They are doing a brew club type of thing like Flying Saucer, with various rewards when you drink a certain number of beers.

Checked this place out yesterday. 50 taps and over 500 bottles. Draft beers are mostly craft, and they had some very good ones (Pro-Am, Hop Rising, Sublimely Self-Righteous, Cali-Belgiuque, and No Label Mint IPA, to name a few). If I'm not mistaken, their bottled beers are available to-go at a discount so that you're not paying the full bar price.

My only gripe was the food situation, which will hopefully improve with time. They don't have their own kitchen, so if you want food you have to order it for delivery from a nearby restaurant. I ordered some food from BJ's and they seemed very confused. I'm sure after a week or two they'll have a good delivery system set up though, and I do think it's neat that WoB is working with other businesses at Stone Oak.
