Newcastle Brown Ale from the UK in the US - a Christmas miracle?

While shopping on Christmas Eve in North Carolina USA, I found this lonely six pack in the cooler. I was a bit stunned. NBA was pulled from the USA in 2019 with a licensing deal given to Lagunitas who came in and changed the recipe, brewing up what I considered swamp water soaked in old band-aids.

This is the real deal UK version.

The store had difficulty ringing it up since the product didn't show in their system. They sold it to me cheap, and as a person who had really missed his Newcastle, I left the store very happy!

How did this happen? Was it accidentally shipped in with other imports and just ended up in that random cooler? Was a new distribution deal struck with Heineken (who AFAIK owns the brand)?

Where in N.C. did you find this? I would love to get my hands on the original version of Newcastle.

Based on your picture, everything looks to be in good shape. Any idea as to how old the beer is? The fact the beer didn't ring up on their system is a bit concerning. Makes me wonder if it got buried in the back, or lost in some distributor warehouse, for a chunk of time. Especially as it was just the one 6 pack in the store (presumably, the store would have made sure the beer was entered into the system if they'd sold previous six packs).

This definitely sounds like something that's just too good to be true.

In any event, I'd be very interested in hearing your opinion of the contents once you crack open a bottle. Fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

Does the pack and/or bottles have US markings/warnings/etc. ? If it doesn't, that would be a dead giveaway that it was intended for a market outside the US.

They need to bring the Real Deal Newcastle Brown Ale back to the US. It's been gone far too long and nothing else on the market these days scratches that itch.

Yes it's fresh and not old stock. Expiry date is Aug 2025. Notable to me are these things:

A search of the Lagunitas website yields absolutely nothing about "Newcastle". Their crappy imposter is gone.

This Newcastle is 11.2 oz and brewed at Tadcaster UK. The last roughly OG recipe bottle I drank was early 2019, and was 12 oz brewed in Holland. I saved the bottle and you can see it in this pic on the left compared to this newest offering. New bottle has old school smaller label.

In a call to corporate, I received a very cautiously worded and guarded reply that, in effect, OG Newcastle Brown Ale should be finding its way back into US stores soon.

True story: I always thought this stuff was in a brown bottle until after I bought one, took it home, opened it, and poured it into a glass. If I'd left it in the brown paper bag, I probably still wouldn't know any different.

Hmm...I'm going to have to check the local stores. I miss the Brown.

Heineken USA got a new TTB label approval for Newcastle Brown Ale last June (seems like the topic has come up before but a quick search turn up nothing).

Well, both brands were owned by Heineken, so no license was necessary. And likely Heineken knew and approved of the Lagunitas recipe.

Yeah, Heineken has done that with a number of brands they own for the US market, including some Murphy's, Tecate and Dos Equis brands.

I'd think that true Newcastle devotees would consider the O.G. Newcastle Brown Ale the stuff from, you know, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (above right) rather than the NBA brewed at the Heineken-owned John Smith Brewery in Tadcaster.

And the recipe was changed by Heineken even before the Lagunitas version.

Newcastle was one of my earlier gateways beers to craft. My dad drank them all the time and I developed a palette for them. My personal preference was that Newcastle tasted best direct out of the 22oz bottle for whatever reason, although I think it had to do with the thicker glass. In my broke college days I could get a pint of wonton soup and a 22oz Newcastle for about $4. Good ol' nostalgia

A local store here in Lexington has it, at least their website says they do...Haven't had it before, might pick me up some if they truly have it when I go by there this weekend.

A bar I used to go to back in the day had an old poster on the wall advertising Newcastle with the tag line "With women as tough as Maggie Thatcher, what do the men drink?" Blatantly sexist but, I guess, one might call it historically interesting.

FWIW in those days Newcastle was one of my go-tos, along with Bass Ale. And yes, definitely a "gateway to craft" for me and others

Thank you for the heads up OP. I spied this in the wild last week and I didn’t pay attention - now I need to go hunting.

OP here - went back to same store tonight with no luck. If anyone does find some, let us know here. It should appear as my pics above or else it may me leftover Lagunitas junk.

And yes I am aware that they have been F'ing with various British recipes for quite some time now including Newcastle. I'm sure Smithwick's has been changed a bit as well. I've spent time in UK and Scotland as well as the US so I've been fortunate/or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it, to taste the differences over the years.
