In the Eastern Part of the State:
    Outer Banks Brewing Station
    Duck Rabbit
    Mother Earth

Out west there are a whole lot more (especially around Asheville) My favorites are:
    Appalachian Mountain Brewery
    Olde Hickory
    Green Man
    Highland

There are plenty more to chose from though.

I love Duck-Rabbit's beers, but I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to visit their taproom. It's incredibly small, and when I went they didn't have anything other than their core beers and a couple seasonals on. They're great beers, but you can find the same selection in bottle shops and grocery stores across the state. The beer is worth buying, but the taproom's not really a destination. Just my opinion.

Nc is a pretty big state, but I like Foothills a lot, Wicked Weed not during really busy hours, Wedge, and Bull City in Durham. If your in the West Asheville, East Durham/Raleigh.

If you make your way to Asheville, stop by Fonta Flora in Morganton. They make funky beers that are original and delicious. Even if you stop by for a flight, I think it's worth it.

Trophy is probably the best in Raleigh, if you're heading east. Fullsteam is fun as is Bull City, both in Durham. Otherwise, stick central and west. The best IMO are:
    NoDa - Charlotte
    Birdsong - Charlotte
    Olde Mecklenburg - Charlotte
    Foothills - Winston-Salem
    Olde Hickory - Hickory
    Fonta Flora - Morganton
    Wicked Weed - Asheville
    Burial - Asheville
Wedge - Asheville (more atmosphere than beer)

Breweries to get some bottles but not necessarily visit:
    -Duck Rabbit
    -Highland
    -Mother Earth
    -LoneRider

You gotta love NC brews. I'm a complete beer geek - live fifteen minutes from Charlotte, 30 minutes from Hickory and about an hour and a half from Asheville. There are still a few spots listed by you guys that I'm FULLY AWARE OF but haven't made time to visit yet.

I would add Natty Green to that list if you like Sours, they have some really good ones, the American Sour and the Sorgum Lambic are terrific.

Same here. I'm in Hickory, so 0 minutes to Hickory, a bit over an hour to Asheville and Charlotte. Finally made it to NoDa and Birdsong two weekends ago.

Highland, Wicked Weed, Green Man, Olde Hickory, NoDa, Triple C, Foothills, Natty Greene, Full Steam, and the rest of The Triangle choices is large. Both Foothills and Natty Greene for atmosphere- Foothills is better with beer, but Natty G was a genuine pioneer in this modern beer boom and deserves more credit than they get. Fonta Flora is a particularly lovely place making cool beers in an extremely relaxing locale. Check out Sam Ervin's house.

Can't believe it took seven posts for someone to mention Olde Mecklenburg - shows the lack of lager love. ;-)

I'm heading to Asheville in mid-july with the wife and kid (by kid, I mean 26 year old daughter) to see Beck (father's day gift). Our time is limited and wife isn't a big beer person so don't want to drag her all over, but I appreciate this list since I won't have time to hit every place in the Asheville area. Been to Pisgah, greenman, Thirsty Monk, Jack of the woods, Bruisin', Asheville Brewing, so looking forward to going to some of the newer places, especially Wicked Weed. Any that maybe I should skip by so I'm spending my time "wisely"? Also, getting in Friday (leaving Nashville very early)...what time would be the best to either go to Wicked Weed or avoid Wicked Weed in terms of crowds? My hope is that they will have some new bottles there and that the Beer Camp 12 packs have been released while there since Tennessee not getting them.

(also sorry if highjacked your thread but figure info we could both use  )

The best part about Wicked Weed as you can feed family there while you enjoy. The same can't be said for Greenman or my other suggestion, which is Burial. Now, if you hop over to say, Highland, there is usually a decent food truck parked out front offering eats, but it isn't the same as WW with a menu. So yea, late lunch or early dinner, but make sure you hit downstairs for a few, as they have an expanded beer list at WW.

Thanks...that might be the plan for Friday then. Is there a place I should hit that is walking distance from Thomas Wolfe Auditorium to enjoy some "Pre-Beck Show" libations on Saturday?

One World brewing, Asheville's newest brewery, is on Patton underneath Farm Burger. Probably a 5 minute walk from the auditorium and the beer is fantastic. Oh and, as far as breweries you should skip by to spend your time wisely, I'd pass on Twin Leaf if I were you.
