Unless they bought it from a distributor it's illegal to resell. Someone told me they don't try to distribute to ny because bars were saving the kegs for special events instead of serving fresh and gouging the price... Don't know if that's true but it would make sense.

Alchemist sends down, don't know who distributes, but they have distro. My guess is same co. as delivers Celia?

There hasn't been normal distribution of Heady Topper to NYC since last year I believe. All the other times you've seen them at bars or shops, they are brought personally, not by Union...
Unless someone else knows more info about this, I believe it is not legal. When it first came delivered by Union, some of the prices were $8-12+ a can. Some Brooklyn stores had it for $8-10 a can. Crazy, but at the same time probably not too far off of the normal markup.

I believe Union still distributes Alchemist beers. They don't make enough Heady cans to meet the demand for NYC or outside of Vermont for that matter.

At 14$ per can, you may as well trade for it. It'll cost you $4$ in locals and be done with it.

Are you sure it's $72 a case I thought it was more like $77?

There have been multiple deliveries out of Vermont, inc. to Pa. I am just saying that any of these cans could be legit.

I've also heard that the last time they tried to distribute through Union down in NYC, they didn't have barcodes on the cans so they couldn't be sold through that distribution channel (they couldn't sell it to their big accounts like Whole Foods). Only a few store got it and those were smaller stores that didn't need to use barcodes to track inventory.

It could be by now. I was there in October 2012.

Only other place I've heard of having it in the NYC area of late was Torst, which wasn't even selling it (gave away a 4-pack tonight for Twitter followers with the "password").

Eagle's prices are ridiculous... I'm honestly shocked they manage to stock such a favorable selection and stay in business. I'd like to have a word with their distributors.

Sadly it takes a lot more than shelf locals to get it from my experience. $14 is ridiculous but I'd think that anything $10 and under is probably a decent pickup IMO.

Well When I got to VT and find heady, I usually ship it out as extras

Mugs had it not too long ago, and Pony usually gives them away when they have contests (which is a great job out of them)

This is true, but I believe the last legit distro to Philly was nearly a year ago at this point.

Alchemist just recently said they don't even have enough supply to regularly ship to Boston, so I wouldn't expect anything South of there anytime soon, unless people are driving up and bringing back carloads of cases.

I'll see if it's cool with him. He wants to keep it on the DL.

I just asked them this question on Twitter, in regards to the $20 game of thrones beer tweet:

There was a shipment to NY not that long ago, I am just saying that if they are old and legal, as they certainly could be, they wouldn't be the first old beers sold for crazy prices at a beer store.

I know of a store here that specializes in shelf aged "rarities"
