o lol. one of the notorious four places in the five boros that there is really no reason to go to.

Oh, of course Beer Table Pantry..
But Bierkraft is pretty good for their sandwiches/draft offerings, just not bottles.
I definitely wouldn't group them with the other 3

Bierkraft has reasonable prices on growler fills and great sandwiches, and you can drink the growler there. They've been overdoing it with the tap takeovers lately, but they still are a great place.

You're forgetting 86 Beer Deli ($100 CBS) and the store on Court and 1st Street ($15 KBS, insane prices on other stuff).

Union Beer Distributors hasn't received cases of HT in over a year, and at that time the cases were sold to selected locations (mostly craft bars) based on recommendations from Alchemist. If anything is out there now it would be either old product or from the secondary market.

I've really come around on Bierkraft. Their growler prices are pretty solid - I wouldn't go out of my way to fill up a growler there, but being a Brooklynite, it's pretty convenient with an excellent variety.

They evidently have such high prices on bottles because of their particular licensing (so their pricing more closely resembles bar pricing instead of retail pricing).

While it's clear over the course of the last few months that I feel differently about New Beer than Franch and others, I'd be hesitant to group them in with Eagle and BTP. New Beer doesn't make a habit of price-gouging (and never has, in my personal case) - their storage sucks for anything time-sensitive, but they don't have insane pricing the way Eagle or BTP do. You literally can't find a reasonably-priced anything at either of those two stores. If you aren't beer hunting, New Beer is a perfectly fine place to go pick up anything with a decent shelf life.

    Flamewar - go!

Let's all just agree that Eagle and BTP both suck major balls.

Outside of mediocre storage conditions (still no sunlight in the store!) what are the knocks against New Beer about? I have had nothing but great experiences there and Harry (the owner) is extremely nice and helpful. Definitely want to hear other opinions though.

There was major drama around the Westy 12 release, when they evidently were releasing it early to special customers and, in at least one case, charged like $140 instead of the asked-for $85. There are also other reports about misreporting to customers what they do/do not have behind the counter, and then asking for big mark-ups on special requests ($35 for BCBCS, for example).

I haven't run into any of this stuff personally, but it's clearly a YMMV kind of place. They always give me a discount on their already-reasonable prices when I buy a few things.

I think they like to help out their regulars who take the time to talk to them, at least thats how it has been with me on one or two occasions. Special release prices have been a bit high at times I agree, though nothing egregious in my experience. One time while talking to Harry it was made clear how much he dislikes non regular customers scooping up all of the special releases and leaving those who frequent the store with nothing. It definitely seems like a YMMV place from others' stories though. It does pay to take the time to talk to him when you are there and make your presence known IMO.

all this talk about overpriced Heady Topper in Brooklyn.. and no mention of Torst giving away cans of it for free.

*edit: woops. sorry. didn't see MisterBisco's post.

After the Westy12 release they took the time to very professionally create an account on BA just to lambaste two of their customers (who are active and great BA')s who appropriately called them out on super shady behavior. I think they told one of them to go fuck himself...very professional thing to do publicly and to customers who have supported them. Pretty sure the thread was nuked.

Getting back to the thread topic, I've had Heady Topper on 2 occasions at 4th Avenue Pub and I've also heard of it landing at Uncle Barry's on 5th Avenue. Doesn't seem like coincidence due to their proximity.

I was chatting up the guys at Uncle Barry's after they opened and they spoke glowingly of 4th Ave (who wouldn't!?) so I'm guessing the two bars probably share a haul from whoever the VT connect is. I'm not sure about Barry's, but 4th Ave charges $12 a can which I didn't think was obscene for a bar. Any DIPA goes for $7-8/12oz in NYC and this blows most of them out of the water.

At 4th Ave, it always goes on their 'featured can/bottle' page in the back of the flip book menu. That's the only way you'll know they have it, doesn't get listed anywhere else. The times I was there they only had 1 or 2 4pks.

I had some at Owl Farm when they first opened, but I believe it may have been from the authorized shipment that NYC got last year. It pops up from time to time at a lot of Park Slope bars, which leads me to believe there might be just one mule who rents his services out to different bars to pick up cans for them.
