I'm a big fan of stouts in general, but especially oatmeal stouts (or any sweet stout). While I've liked most I've had I haven't had anything to quite rival Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. But being the beer to revive the style, surely there are some out there that compete? Personally, I wouldn't say it's better, but I do have a soft spot for Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat.

Have you tried Firestone Walkers Velvet Merlin or Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout by Rogue?

I really like Samuel Smith's, but think that Elysian Dragonstooth Stout is better.

Once upon a time I would've suggested Young's- too bad we can't get it any more. Other than that I can't think of any I've had recently with such a strong yeast signature. That is one type of beer you'd think that some of the 'ringwood' breweries would excell at, but I can't think of one.

For more straightforward coffee/chocolate forward takes I do like Ipswich and New Holland's The Poet.

Good call, I'm not a fan of most Elysian beer, I think it's all pretty mediocre, but Dragonstooth is sooooooo good.

Love Oatmeal Stouts as well. My favorite used to be Rogues Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout until I got to try Ipswich Oatmeal Stout, which blew it out the waters.

Anderson Valley was also a good rec.

Local to me (NJ) is River Horse Oatmeal Milk Stout. It's a seasonal that I look forward to every year.
Another that I sing the praises of often is Stockyard Oatmeal Stout. It's the Trader Joe's brand and it's one of my favorites of the style. Plus it's dirt cheap at $7 a sixer.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is my favorite easy drinking beer, so I can't really suggest anything else.

Try Ballast Point Sextant from San Diego. It is nitro conditioned always. Amazing and sessionable.

Glencoe organic wild oat stout is a nice one. Real good on cask at least. Youngs is good too.

I love Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout and I like a few others that people have suggested however tonight for saturday night stout night. I think I'm going with The Poet. I've seen it where I go was thinking about it for the Superbowl. I'm not a big ravens fan or a 49ers fan either but for tonight I might have to give it a shot. Beside I already got word that hot russian girl is gonna be down there giving out vodka samples. thanks and happy tippling

Just about any oatmeal stout named is better than Sam Smith's. I really don't get everyone's infatuation with their stouts. FW Velvet Merlin walks all over Sam Smith's oatmeal stout.

Sam Smith's is the standard and I personally do not seek anything else out. I understand people's preferences vary and that everyone like to try something new but I cannot recommend anything better.

I snagged a Samuel Smith today actually, and stumbled across a Left Hand Smoke Jumper from '06. We shall see how it ages. I also made the trek to 3 Floyd's a couple weeks ago, and tried their oatmeal stout named Backmasking. I really enjoyed it.

Velvet Merlin, Boris, FBS, and the oatmeal stout from SN's basecamp sampler are my faves. At the same time, I don't like Sam Smith (odd metalic flavour), so our tastes might be quite different.

It's a seasonal, but Fish Brewing's Fish Tale Organic Oatmeal Stout is really good.

Left Hand Milk Stout in Nitro is pretty damn incredible. It's like a beer milkshake, which is all together, incredible!

Great beer but it's a milk stout, not an oatmeal stout ;)

Tyranena Down'n Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout is one that I like more than Sam Smiths. Wish they would brew that rather than Hop Whore. Flat Earth Black Helicopter use to be another one but it is more a coffee stout, and the last batch sucked.

For my $$$ not enough can be said about St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout. A bench mark for the style, Sam Smith was a gateway to the style for me. But there are a few others I would purchase before it.

Ipswich and Mayflower. Both make very good oatmeal stouts. Honorable mention goes to Shorts Mystery Stout.
