Tried I Know You Are the other day... that sh*t ain't hazy
Which calls into question the style of beer Offshoot is producing, which seems to be standard IPA. Some hazy, some not so hazy. Hazy being nothing more than a marketing description for these beers because they are not described as NEIPA which must exhibit a ''cloudy appearance" according to BJCP.
Just because NEIPA has recently been added as an official "style" by BA that now carries a BJCP description doesn't mean it's origins were not as a marketing buzzword. I think that's why a lot of people (myself included) weren't a fan of that decision.
Brewers are going to describe their beer however they see fit. Would it be better for everyone if they used terms like "hoppy" or "unfiltered" or "turbid" that are less about marketing? Of course. But saying "hazy" is about marketing and "NEIPA" is not is disingenuous.
What the hell??? Hard to take them serious
Agreed. But if Offshoot called one of their non-hazy beers NEIPA would it not be technically flawed at this point?
Edit: I just want to give Offshoot money for NEIPA beer brewed to style just like the majority of folks in this thread.
I hope this doesn't come out the wrong way, but the truth is it only matters if you want it to. As I wasn't a fan of NEIPA being dubbed an official style in the first place, nor am I a BJCP judge, you won't find me calling out a a brewery for not making a turbid beer "to style."
Look at a photo of Heady Topper in a glass on Instagram and then look at the beers being brewed by Monkish or Hoof Hearted or Aslin and tell me those following the trend it started are technically "to style." If the proverbial face that launched a thousand ships doesn't even look like the style it inspired, how can anyone say what is or isn't flawed?
Heady Topper started it at all, but everyone under the sun is trying to make Tree House clones.
what did you think of the taste?
Like Julius? Doesn't look all that chicken soup-y by "modern" standards. Maybe the photog used the wrong IG filter on this one:
Or are they trying to make Trillium clones. Congress Street (I think?) was the first one JC canned:
My point, again, is that to criticize beers a brewer describes as hazy for not being "to style" is kinda ridiculous at this point. Pick any of the OG NEIPAs and compare them to what 2nd generation non New England-based brewers are making and technically they're all flawed.
It's funny how appearance can change perspective on taste. Especially when the photos that are represented have a high ass ISO setting.
Luckily the first guys who ignored the long-held belief "cloudiness in beer is a flaw" were brewing to their specific palates, not to how their creations might look in a glass at a high ass ISO setting. Otherwise we wouldn't have Heady or Congress Street and everything that's come since.
I agree, just seems like all these over saturated pictures in social media is like eye candy for viewers and a automatic juice bomb.
Anyone know if cans for CA are shipping out this week?
Found it to be neither off-putting or exceptional. Background noise in the sea of available shelf IPAs.
I was at the tasting room last Friday and had a chance to try Relax. I really enjoyed it. So much so that I went ahead and bought a 4-pack. The email yesterday that there is a fresh batch reminded me that I was going to ask @BruerJoel if there are any plans to start dating the cans (maybe once the new canning line is installed)?
Certainly a possibility once the new line is up and running. Glad you enjoyed it!
More hazy again.. I really hate these can designs. Another easy pass.
Hazy hazy hazy hazy hazy hazy!!!
and yet people trash Noble’s art work. IMO which is far superior.
Woah, non AB InBev breweries can get African Queen hops again? That's exciting.
Did I miss this email?
Sorry if this was covered somewhere, but I missed it if so. Are offshoots cans dated? Local shop in VA beach got some Relax in today.
It's a possibility.
They should be dated, but the mobile canner ink printer often doesn't work, so you may just find some blue splatter on the bottom of cans. We'll have a date printed on the bottom of the cans when our line is up and running, which we anticipate in early April.
The batch that made its way to Virginia / Maryland / DC was packaged on 2/23.
The Bruery / Offshoot Beer Co.
I just got the e-mail, so maybe the instagram post just preceded the e-mail this time.
Had Chill (Imperial version of Relax) at OG, enjoyed it more than some of the recent can releases. Wonder if we'll see this canned.
I mean you read the hop and grain bill for Smell That Smell and it's screams delicious, Nelson and Citra, what could go wrong? Can they nail this one ? I hope they do.
And yet more haze... for the love of God, MIX IT UP... PLEASE!!!!
I’ve given up on Offshoot like I’ve given up on Monks. Movin’ On...
Picked up a 4pack of relax over the weekend after a friends recommendation. I was impressed! Nice job offshoot
Yes. I bought one can a few weeks back. I was surprised as well. Better than 90% of their high $$ online sales. I’d like to pick up a four pack of this but would like to see the cans dated first. Is there a possibility that these will be dated in the near future? Or not?
I'll just leave this here...
A broken image?
Trying to fix it... until then, click here: https://ibb.co/cpdVQH
I think I might go for Smell that Smell: I'm a sucker for collab IPA's, and Garage Project has been a pretty solid collaborator in my experience.
You read my mind. Also a pickup during WoL makes things easier.
