Cut carbs? By consuming lots of beer? Really? Does he even know what "carbs" are? :stuck_out_tongue:

Sounds fun but not the best way to diet. Not sure what he eats presuming Atkins (no carb) but you cannot drink beer on that so I don't see this lasting long probably peeing off water weight from drinking and dehydrating his body.

How many times has this now been attempted? Maybe Morgan Spurlock can make a new documentary: Doppelbock Me. :sunglasses:

Fasting is a big part of being human?

I don't think I could drink for a month straight (even without the no food challenge). God bless this gentleman and the local CVS that is going to be low on Advil all month!

Definitely not eliminating carbs, but as long as you abstain from the food you are just replacing them. I don’t do Lent, but I can’t imagine doing it for that long. I actually tried it once and made it about 5 days. I wasn’t drinking doppelbokcs or specifically heavier/maltier beers, but there were plenty of stouts. I really wanted food after 3 days though.
The important part is to just think of it as food. You can’t get drunk, or else you get dehydrated (like AZbeerdude mentioned) and you also get the munchies, which is counter productive. While it’s not an optimal diet, you can/will lose weight. It’s not too far from what I do after football season. Increase protein, reduce carbs (drink more whiskey:wink:) increase excercise. Usually cut around 3” off the waist every year.

I did not watch entire video but how would you go to work? LOL hey boss man, just doing the beer only diet, cheers! I am guessing he works from home etc, seems like a hard one to try with a job/driving.

Dick Cantwell wrote an article years ago telling the story of his experience in doing this exact same thing. He didn't really do it though, it was intended to be funny.

I've always been curious about how the monks did that though, and I thought that I'd try it. I even got Tony Forder from Ale Street News to agree that if I did he'd buy the article. Well, it didn't go so well. If you were a monk and you could sleep a lot and not do too much activity it might have been possible, but for someone with a full-time job it's tough! I'm curious as to how long he can make it.

This is very doable - but I'd be very picky about the beer and would choose Belgian ales exclusively. Ales of this calibre / nature have some sustenance. I'd would also make attempts to gain weight before-hand coz' weight loss is something I don't need. Obviously Monks existed on these beers during their fasting periods. The guy attempting this would need to consume lots of water to flush out his system trying to avoid damage to liver & kidneys I would think

If I was younger I’d go on a chicken and veg chefs salad, bourbon and sex diet, I’d forgo all others. Protein, minerals, excercise, I could do this at 23.

Not true. Atkins diet recommends a carb intake of less than 20 grams per day to maintain ketosis, so if you’d like to take your carbs in beer form, you are permitted to do so. Sláinte!

Useless information for everyone, that I thought i'd never use.

Did you know, that Shiner Bock was originally made and produced for lent. It was a higher calorie offering that would sustain people fasting (I learned that at the brewery). In Fact, German Monks in Einbeck invented the Bock style for fasting.

There is precedent to what this guy is doing.

It'd be interesting. I also agree with the people who say this guy won't be and shouldnt' be chugging beers all Lent long.

    Whole 3 pack?

So he could have maybe 4 beers in a day? Maybe 1 strong Belgian ale? 1 Imperial Stout?

20 carbs adds up fast with maltier beer.

And then where's he getting his protein/fats like you get on Atkins?
  32. AlcahueteJ

    AlcahueteJ Savant (908) Dec 4, 2004 Massachusetts

Theoretically our body processes one beer per hour. However he'll have no food in his stomach, so that math is out the window.

Maybe he could have 1 beer every 1.5 to 2 hours? And if he keeps electrolytes in his system by taking supplements and drinking water, he might be ok I guess?

The catch 22 is that he needs more beers for calories, but he can't drink them so quickly that he gets drunk.

Life, she is full of compromises.

I recommend he drinks relatively low ABV beer. Why not throw in a NA now and then? He needs to have a varying diet, at least 20 different beers.
