    Hi,

I tried another 1845 last night, and as usual was not impressed.

I've had 6 pints over the last month and am rapidly coming to conclusion 1845 is not a good beer. I didn't notice any foul tastes or smells so I'm pretty sure I've had good bottles, and the BB4 dates have all been in early 2013. Maybe I need to let the bottle-conditioning work its magic?

On the sweet side of things I find it to be non-descript, to the point my impression reduces to there's something else in the beer beside hops. On the hop side I find the finish repulsive, a nasty bitterness. I'm a hop head, I love European pilsners and Weyerbacher's Hops Infusion. All I'm getting is a blah up-front taste which I guess is supposed to be the malty side, followed by that nasty bitterness from the hops.

It's hard for me to accept Fuller's could be so off base with 1845, given their ESB is spot-on every time. 1845 reminds me of the many domestic microbrews, usually specialties, which boast a complex mix of flavors but woefully miss the mark.

I had it a few times and based on those experiences, its one of my favorites. Different tastes for different mates I guess.

I find it to be near the top of it's style, but I'm also a fan of most English style ales. Drink what you like, leave the rest for everyone else.

Interesting. I've had it a few times and formed a different impression of the beer. Maybe it is just a case where your tastes are different enough from most of the folks who have rated the beer that it just doesn't work for you. For me it's still a good beer, as it seems to be for most of the reviewers.

I do enjoy 1845, but never could have more than one. London Pride & ESB I could drink plenty.

One of the better bottled beers in my opinion. Good job though that we don't all like the same beers or supplies would be a problem

I have had 1845 several times.....I really thought is was a great beer. It has been a couple years since my last though. It's been said before but everyone's palate is different I guess.

I think it is exceptional. When you describe yourself as a hop-head, are you looking for more of a West Coast IPA style? This won't deliver that. I'd recommend 1845 for those who like up front, sweet malty beer and don't mind some alcohol burn. As others have said, don't bang your head against the wall trying to figure it out.

I agree. There's an dark astringency there that puts me off as well.
    Always has.
Give me ESB, Golden Pride or the Vintage anyday.

I just had it for the first time about 2 weeks ago and really liked it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

This beers aroma and flavour, for me, are pretty damned far away from being nondescript. I think it's a great beer.

I hate to be judgmental but, you are wrong! 1845 is fantastic!

1845 is very good. Samuel Smith's Yorkshire Stingo is even better.

I'm with OP on this one, 1845 doesn't do it for me.

1845 is my favorite bottled beer. Hard to find anything like it in the United States.

I have not had it for a year or so but enjoyed the hell out of it when I did.

    Thanks for your comments.

Over the weekend I decided to give 1845 another shot. I bought 2 pints at Whole Foods on 14th St NYC, where I know the beers get good treatment...constantly kept cool. The pints I was complaining about in my OP were purchased at other locations where they're held at room temperature, Swiggers on 86th and Whole Foods on Houston. I don't know if this will make a difference, maybe I expect too much from bottle-conditioning.

If this last ditch experiment fails I'll bag 1845, I'd have no problem limiting my Fuller's to their ESB...which is always superb.

    Thanks again, KP.

I don’t have any personal experience with 1845. Below is a paragraph from a review of 1845 by NeroFiddled. Maybe a bit of aging would be beneficial for you?

    Cheers!

“I was not impressed w/ this beer the 1st time I had it several years ago. I found it out of balance with a harsh bitterness. This bottle has been aged - I'm not sure for how long, but it's well over a year - and the perceived bitterness is greatly reduced and the flavor is much rounder. Really nice. Rich, but also quite drinkable, due in great part to it's lightly tart fruitiness. I'd definitely recommend aging this beer for at least 6 month prior to tasting.”

I've had it twice and really liked it. I'm also a fan of English Ales, and this was right up there with my favorites.
