For those of you attending Return of the Belgian Beer Fest on Saturday, September 17 in Portland, Maine, make sure to check out our two collaboration blends with Allagash.

On April 11, 2016, Team BeerAdvocate ventured to Portland, Maine, to blend the official Return of the Belgian Beer Fest beer at Allagash Brewing Company. After pulling samples from several oak and stainless steel tanks and experimenting with different combinations, we ended up with two blends (Papier Doré & Porte Noir), a light and a dark, to represent two sides of the sour flavor experience—and because we just couldn’t pick a favorite.

    Papier Doré
French for “gold paper,” and referencing La Fleur en Papier Doré, a tiny café in Brussels that was frequented by surrealists, the lighter of the two blends combines Farm to Face, a Pale Ale aged with Pediococcus, Lactobacillus, and peaches; a yet-to-be-named golden Brettanomyces beer; and a 7-year-old oak barrel-aged beer to add depth of flavor.

    Porte Noir
French for “black door,” this beer shares a name with La Porte Noire, a cavernous Celtic bar in Brussels. This blend started with a yet-to-be named darker foeder beer, then additions of Nancy, a red sour fermented with Maine cherries and Brettanomyces, and some 7-year-old oak barrel-aged beer for complexity.

Update from Allagash: "We’re excited to pour two new beers for the Return of the Belgian Beer Fest, coming up on September 17th. Porte Noir mixes earthy aromas of cherry and black currant with flavors like concord grape and bread crust. Papier Doré is a tangerine-colored beer full of tart flavors like eucalyptus, and stone fruit. Herbal aromas of mint and dill mix with notes of vanilla. Both blends were created by Jason, our brewmaster, and the BeerAdvocate team, using beer from our wild beer cellars."
