Anyone had it? Thoughts? I felt like I didn't know this beer and I've had it many many times

I agree 100%. I drank one Friday bottled 3.08 and it seemed like it was missing several notes. It was piney and bitter and didnt have any of the citrus goodness that it normally does. It tasted very ordinary. I drink it often and this was not the same.

Had it on tap yesterday in Denver. Have no clue what batch it was, but it was definitely not as great as I've had recently in bottles. Maybe they needed to clean their taps or something. Would rather have a fresh Sucks.

I havent had it yet, but i'm breaking from my Barleywine/Imperial stout phase and planned on getting some this weekend...I'm actually interested to have it again hearing this....Does this mean we less appreciate our own locals, that I lost excitement for a pliny?

Obviously it's infected. Spread the word. PM me if you have any and I will tell you an address to send it to where it can be safely and properly disposed of.

I would be glad to sample some. Please BM me (not that type of BM, just a message thanks) and I'll give you my address so I can try some.

On a serious note, is it possible that so many people will start looking for that "next best thing" or get so wrapped up in hype around other beers that they'll maybe start looking for critiques in what are normally great beers?

I expect there to be a thread soon about Hopslam>Pliny

In all seriousness I have had slightly "off" batches of Pliny. They are always good, your always going to have some differences form batch to batch.

Same old jokes always in these type of threads:
" Ten days is way too old please send them to me so I can properly dispose of them"

For the OP: You might have better luck posting this in a local forum to get people who have actually tried it rather than the same old jokes. It also seems that over time it has sort of become blasphemy on BA to suggest that a particular batch or vintage tastes different. People no longer want to admit that its possible for these things to happen from time to time.

You've hit the "Pliny wall", have a few Ranger IPA's then come back and have the Pliny! Don't worry too much, you still have a few days before the Pliny goes sour!!

The local forums would be deathly silent as no one is willing to criticize the golden calf that is Russian River. They could catch Vinnie peeing into tank and somehow claim it was a new way to pitch yeast or some BS. It is not even being a homer, I think Pliny has literally reached cult, I mean real cult, status.

This sucks. I just sent a trade with three of these and he's been dying to try it.
In regards to getting it fresh, there are weeks when I get it at my local Whole Foods in Marin County and it will have been bottled on the same day as when I get it. Sucks doesn't it?

I was anxiously waiting for a "this year's Pliny isn't as faptastic as last year's Pliny thread". We've got ourselves a certified Cali beer bro tragedy here. I need to make some popcorn.

According to the internets, this year's Lagunitas Sucks is better than ever. Get yo-self some!

Sorry to disappoint you guys but Pliny is as good as ever with the occasional batch that's not as great. I had a Pliny from this batch yesterday and my first thought was that it wasn't up to standard. Still good though, but it was lacking something. I have no doubt it will be back on target soon.

Their batches have varied ever since they began bottling. It's been hit or miss for a very long time.

What a surprise. I guess I wasn't crazy after all when I thought to myself that it tasted different at a beer tasting I had a few days ago. It did taste a bit bland, but I was thinking it was because I had a few beers beforehand and I thought the previous beers altered my taste.

I agree with the comments regarding variability: I think it's been true for a long time that different batches taste a little different. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think that's true of pretty every small brewery I'm familiar with. It's not going to be like Budweiser where they do a spectroscopy analysis to make sure every batch is exactly the same every time. I think this is part of reason there are periodically these threads about "I had a pliny and it wasn't as great as I expected?", "Is pliny over-rated?", "Is pliny stale after X number of days?", etc etc etc etc.

Anyway... even a "mediocre" batch of pliny is damn good beer.

Yes, I felt the same. Still a great beer but it was different. I had a second bottle the next day to verify. Just some batch variation, nothing to worry about. They change the hop mix a bit I'm sure. Nose was very tame on this one, but another batch is always around the corner

Yea no. Even after other beers one can generally count on PtE for a big punch in the mouth. Knuckle sandwich I had last night was pretty bomb though.

On a related note an older lady was very excited to get the last bottle of PtE at WF so that she can mail it to her son in Boston. She did not heed my advice to include some more locals in that shipment. "Common, don't send one bottle"
