I'm hoping to attend Monk's Cafe's Mad Monday event with the Russian River tap takeover... including Pliny the Younger on 3/3/14. I'm weighing the options of flying into Philly on Sunday night or Monday. The event opens at 11:30am on Monday. Has anyone been to this event in prior years? What sort of turnout is to be expected on a Monday at mid day? Do they run out of the Younger early in the day, or does it last for a couple days? Any advice would be helpful.

If I get there around 1pm on Monday, would I be too late?

Last time I went was two years ago, there was a line outside of the bar at least 90 minutes before the bar opened, and the keg kicked very quickly (Like within 20 mins). Assuming things are still the same I would imagine that by 1 pm the Younger will all be gone.

Do not fly in on Monday if you want to try this beer. In fact, I generally hope you've got other reasons for coming to Philly besides attending this event.

I will be gone very quickly, if you aren't in line by 9-10 you are going to probably miss it.

And that date is still not confirmed.

Fair enough. I've heard reports of people getting multiple pours of the Younger through the afternoon. I found that pretty hard to believe. Looks like I'll be targeting a Sunday flight. Thanks.

Look at the very front page of the website. The "events" page still has the disclaimer, but they added the event to the front page with no disclaimer. This leads me to believe that the date has been confirmed, but they haven't updated the "events" page yet.

Nobody buys tickets on Monday. C'mon, everyone knows Tuesday is the day to buy! :sunglasses:

You give the Monk's website way too much credit. I don't understand why you would post on here asking for advice and then question the very advice given to you.

The event probably won't be confirmed until the keg actually arrives--it has not yet arrived.

I'm asking advice for attending the event. I appreciate that HRamz3 is concerned about the date not being confirmed. I simply replied that it seems to have been confirmed. Before booking anything, I will be sure to know it is happening. However, the advice I seek is about attendance at the event... whether I should make the extra effort to fly in on Sunday, or if Monday at 1pm would be too late. Earlier posters helped with those concerns.

So your flying into Philly just to try younger? Why didn't you just fly out to SF and try it at the pub? As Ryan said, I hope you have other reasons to be coming to Philly other than just this event.

Just to be helpful, I went to this event about three years ago and the line was around 2-3 blocks long by the time they opened the doors and only about half of it got in before it was 1in1out. He had two kegs that year and it lasted until about 4pm. Recent years they have kicked earlier and earlier. Simply put, it's one of the biggest events of the year outside of PBW. Be prepared to get there very early and stand in a long line.

The pub only had it on for two weeks, and the wait to just get in was several hours long.

Monk's will have it on for less that a few hours, and the wait to just get in will be several hours long.

Which would you take your chances on?

2 years ago Monk's tapped a keg that ran well into the next day. It was great to go get a pour during the day (2 hours after opening with no wait btw), go back to work, hit up a few other events around town for happy hour, go see Van Halen that night and stop back at Monk's to surprisingly find PtY still on. Don't let everyone scare you off. They're just trying to get more for themselves.

They had a second keg that year, and they didn't announce that keg in advance. I am not trying to scare anyone, and I am certainly not trying to get more for myself--I wouldn't take a day off work for this beer when there are plenty of just as good (if not better) beers available everyday in Philly.
