My buddy is headed to Portland this week and he knows I'm in love with beer. He volunteered to pick me up some delicious bottles. The problem is that he doesn't know a ton and will probably make mistakes unless I give him good directions...so, I need:

    1. 1-2 bottle shops he should hit.
    2. 5-6 bottles available that you'd have him grab (outside of any RR stuff). Don't worry about styles, what would you personally grab?

In terms of bottle shops, I'd recommend Belmont Station or Beer Mongers. Both places have an excellent selection and good customer service (which I think is key in your case). Belmont Stations prices are a bit higher than what you'll spend at Beermongers, but their selection is a bit better as well. Regardless, you'll do fine at either place, so I'd just send your friend to whichever place is easier for him to get to.

"Don't worry about styles, what would you personally grab?"

I'd have him grab me 6 bottles of Blue Dot, seeing as how you asked. I'm assuming this is not a useful answer for you, so let's move on to options number two and three. Both Beermongers and Belmont Station employ knowledgeable employess who know their shit about the local beer scene. So one option is to simply have your friend walk into either store, hand someone your instructions on what to buy, and leave the rest to them. I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed by their recommendatons. An even better idea, I would think, would be for you to pick out the beer yourself. I'm assuming that both you and your friend own cell phones, so why don't the two of you shop for beer together (this is what I and my girlfriend do all the time - seeing as how I live on the East Coast and she lives in the Seattle/Tacoma area)? You could even get input from the store staff while doing this, by simply having an employee get on the line with you for a few minutes. I doubt they'd mind... especially seeing as how I see them making recommendations on the phone to locals all the time.

    Have fun...

Belmont Station is well staffed and very helpful. Add to that they list all their bottles online in the link that follows. Of those bottles listed I recommend or want to try Flattail Cucumber Berliner, any Upright, Commons Flemish Kiss, Commons Eidolon, Commons Wit, Logsdon Seizoen Bretta, and Heater Allen Bobtoberfest. Black Butte XXIV is still available too if that interests you. You can literally make a list, give it to your buddy, and have him hand it to an employee there. They'll pull the bottles for him to make it simple.

Go with the recs above; both places are great for selection and helpful service. If you want a couple other options (depending on what's convenient for your buddy), try Bridgetown Beerhouse on N Mississippi or Beaumont Market on NE Fremont.

If you want something seasonal, I'd have him ask for Elysian's 'Great Pumpkin' or 'Dark O The Moon'. The Commons and Logsdon are both great calls by hopsbreath. Also, he could look for Upright - I'm a fan of the Five and Six, in particular, as well as their seasonal and Sole Composition stuff. Depending on how close a 'buddy' he is, he may stop by there during their odd Friday/Saturday/Sunday-only hours and grab something not regularly distributed for you.
