It was awesome! I didn't get a ton of blueberry taste out of it, but it was a delicious beer. Much more malt forward than I'd have guessed...almost tasted reminiscent of a Flanders Red to me. Very quality stuff, I'd drink that all the time.

Also, here's a bit of Bourbon Vanilla DL and the scene as we enjoyed these beers:

Agree with everything here and what Jbuddle had to say. Highlights of the night for were:

Stouts: PVW Black Magick - miles ahead of Rare at this point (Rare is still quite good though) & Mornin' Delight (really one of the best stouts i've had and a damn impressive beer).

Lambic/Gueuze/Saison: Peconic (deliciously tart and juicy) & '96 Cantillon Gueuze (just a tad acidic but really quite complex)

Only one that underwhelmed for me was the Brandy Hunahpu. Still very good but the barrel seemed to do almost nothing to the beer. Better off just getting regular Hunahpu.

It was time to trim down the cellar, so I had friends over and we did what I believe to be the full barrel aged firestone walker tasting (excluding black xantus as that is nectar ales "technically").

    Here's the full line up.

And because I collect them, this is how the bottle caps have changed over time.

Even though the 10 and 11 are getting quite old, we all really enjoyed them and a few people found the 10 to be their favorite. I enjoyed 12 and 13 the best, but they were all really tasty.

Great times had by all and happy to have room for more beer.

Haha oh wow!!! Touching my peepee over this one. I can't believe people drink like this. I had a tasting last week and no one RSVPed, so I couldn't bust out wales. But I hope to!

Well I'll be damned. Looks like it was just a regular ol' firestone tasting then :relaxed:. Nothing special to see here. Move along.

It was released in '10 with "5 years" on the label, right? So wouldn't that imply 2015? Or are you saying it should say "3 years" on the label?

I hope to try Rare someday! Please don't let it be past its prime...

The base beer that was aged in PVW23 barrels is '08 Goose Island BCBS I believe.

  18. MssrTussaud

    MssrTussaud Initiate (0) Apr 17, 2013 California

Yeah, I understood you were saying that. I was curious if the label indicates 5 years from release or from brewing.

I think the statement is "develops in the bottle up to 5 years," right? Doesn't that imply 5 years from bottling date? If so, then should Rare still have 2 years left?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this. :relaxed:

Lol. That's a good question. I have no idea. I guess its up for interpretation. THOUGH... if you look at an '08 BCBS, doesn't it also say develops for up to 5 years in the bottle? I don't know if that's significant or not...

  20. MssrTussaud

    MssrTussaud Initiate (0) Apr 17, 2013 California

I don't know about '08, but the versions I've seen (Coffee, Cherry, Bramble, Vanilla) say it. And I think most of those are barrel-aged for 1 year, not 2 like Rare. I guess maybe it's just a standard thing they put on, and Rare is falling off earlier than advertised? That saddens me.

The tricky part about the word "develops" is that it =/= gets better. Which is unfortunate
