    Probably a noob question, but...

I enjoyed Prairie Noir, and have a couple in my closet from the last Texas release. I popped one tonight, and poured it. Looked and smelled great.

But I noticed quite a bit of weight left at the bottom of the bottle. I tipped the bottle and waited for whatever was still in there to make its way out. There was quite a bit of it, and it had the consistency of hot fudge. Light brown in color. It tasted like bitter coffee.

The beer in the glass tastes fine, but... what is the sludge? And, if this is somewhat normal, swirl it in the beer before pouring it in the glass, or dispose of it with the bottle?

Ive seen plenty of sediment, but nothing like this.

It's just bottle conditioned. That's just dregs (spent yeast / sediment). You don't have to drink the sludge, but if you do, you'll be just fine.

Some have some digestive issues with the yeast sludge.

Personally, most yeast trub usually has a rather bitter taste and I avoid getting too much of it in the glass.

On unfiltered/bottle conditioned beers I will normally let it sit standing up for 20 minutes or so before i pour it to let anything in the bottle settle on the bottom and leave the last bit in the bottle instead of pouring the entire thing so I don't get trub in my glass but it is harmless.

just gives you gas. most hefe beers in bottles are swirled before opening. However the norm for most beers is when refrigerated or standing for a long tim eis to pour in a manner to leave the dregs undisturbed as it will impart flavor wanted or unwanted.

Just to say again, this was the consistency of a thick maple syrup, and took up maybe 1/2 inch of the bottom of the bottle. Not the usual sediment I see in many beers (which I sometimes will swirl in).

Im sure its fine, but I will not be swirling it, heh. Thanks for the feedback.

I usually pour half the bottle, swirl the rest and then finish pouring. My belly is fine

It could also be protein that makes a ball, which I have seen in anything from Rochefort to Southern Star. At least it wasn't a slug:wink:

The dregs in the Vanilla Noir are pretty damn tasty. I usually drink it in 2 pours; the first pour is without and the second pour I swirl some of the dregs in. It seems to boost the vanilla flavor some.

Ive got three Vanillas left, almost drank one tonight. Hoping for a little better luck than the first two(still drinkable), heh.

I will use the two pour method on the next one.
