Ranger Creek Small Batch 5 Infected?

    Did anyone else taste a strong sourness in this beer that mostly overwhelmed the intended smoke, bourbon, and prominent malt-forward sweetness one would expect in such a brew? After my experience with Small Batch 3 and considering others' comments on 2 and 4, I would assume infection is the case. What's the verdict?

    Do you have any left or did you pour it? If you have some left try to get it to them, they're sending it off to lab's.

    Seeing that thread is what urged me to post this. I think it's more helpful to us (consumers) and them (producers) to have this information front-and-center rather than embedded in another topic's discussion. If there are lots of us with the same information, they will have a clearer ability to track what we are saying.

    I don't have any left as we split a bottle several ways and spent the majority of the the time re-tasting to determine if it really was an infection. I purchased at Lonestar Beverage, so my guess is some or all of what they have remaining at the store will be subject to the same potential issue.

    I haven't had it yet so I can't comment on it being infected or not. Could you have perhaps used the power of influence to think that its infected? If you look hard enough for something you'll find. This has happened to me with a coffee stout that did not have any coffee. I couldn't smell anything but I swore I could taste it since it was supposed to be a coffee stout I was looking for coffee and convinced myself there was coffee taste.

    I've had it. It definitely had a dark fruit tartness, but was not overpowering. They need to stop wasting their time waxing these bottles because they are not meant for aging at all! Not saying they are bad beers, but I always buy and drink the bottle with in a couple weeks after it came out to get to try it before something weird happens.

    I tasted it. I tried it the week it came out and opened it right out of the fridge. At first, the nose was fairly good with a smoke and vanilla barrel character. The first taste had an obvious tart fruit funk that I got out of the other Small Batch Series. As it warmed the nose gave off even more tart like funk. I couldn't finish half the beer and down the drain it went. Just like all the other Small Batch Series, besides #2 which consequently isn't barrel aged.

    Even more boggling that RC does not detect any noticeable off flavors from the stock they keep(Lost Abbey anyone). Maybe they should test a few and keep them in 80-85 degree temps for a week and see what happens.

    Also, there is no way this beer will age well for 10 years no matter how well it's cellared. I wish they'd stop this claim. I doubt any of these beers will age well even for a year or two. Only a handful of beers in the world that aren't lambics can age well for 10 years. Most especially a new brewery that doesn't seem to know what's going on with their own beer. It might be time to hire an outside consultant/QC person like Lost Abbey did. At the very least bring someone in for a month or two. Though RC might not have the money for that so quit barrel aging for now.

    I like how SB1 is aging. May not hold up for a decade, but I think it'll still be very good after a year or two. 3 and 4 had great of aging potential as well, if not for that one thing....

    This was not an issue of confirmation bias as none of the people in my group had any awareness of this beer being infected. The first question asked when one friend smelled the beer before tasting it: "Is this infected?" The second question, after we all tasted it: "Has anyone heard of this batch being infected?" We knew some previous batches had issues (namely 3) but thought they'd cleared up after we'd tried 4 and had a very positive experience.

    As major supporters of beer we like, our group is not so much looking to prove a beer is infected as it is looking to disprove such rumors. In this case, we didn't know the potential issue. That's why I'm here asking this question; to raise awareness in case it is a widespread problem. As I mentioned above, it facilitates both consumers and the producers having this knowledge, which in theory helps both groups.

    Same here got one at DQ on Thursday and there was no sign of infection.

    I'm not saying that you had any malicious intentions or anything like that just curious if it was a case of "we know the previous batches have had issues. so I wonder if this one does?" Hopefully its not infected but only time will tell. Of course if it ends up being a "good" infection I might buy a couple bottles :wink:

    Considering the perception was created before that question was raised, I assure you that we were not manifesting infection. We smelled and tasted a sour, off flavor that 1) indicated infection, then 2) reminded us of a problem experienced in a previous batch.

    As for "good infection," caveat emptor.

    I drank mine and tried another.. neither were infected... wasn't my favorite, but my cousin loved it and picked up another couple of bottles. They all came from Smith Street Specs.

    Didn't pick up any hint of infection in the bottle I had, but that was a few weeks ago. I was already planning to buy another for immediate drinking (I've got a second cellared), so I'll report back.

    All joking aside. I must be the luckiest guy when it comes to these small batches. #3 was the only one that seemed off to me. I've made my opinion of #5 clear on other threads. I thought it was good and I think the "I" word gets thrown around way to much on BA. Not saying their stuff isn't infected.
