I wanted to start looking into acquiring/ tasting harder to get IPAs. Can anyone list a few hard to get and rare IPAs/ DIPAs? Thanks for your time.

Just a suggestion, but I think you'd be better off just focusing on getting good ones.

Cause the rare ones taste the best... beer isn't baseball cards. Drink FRESH and GOOD IPAs.

Separately, it's hard to answer this since I have no idea where you live... IPAs tend to be "rare" because they are small batch, seasonal, and not distributed... what's rare for me might not be rare for you.

If you can snag a supplier of Heady Topper, Pliny, Alpine, and Hopslam/oracle (when they come out) you'll be rocking and rolling with all the "rare" (read limited distro) awesome IPAs you'll ever need.

Also Double Sunshine and KRBC Citra. Both outstanding.

    I don't get it...:stuck_out_tongue:

OP - If you get Citra, make sure you get a JO to accompany it. It really is, wait for it, just outstanding.

Might be a good idea to put this post elsewhere. Unless you're ISO/FT trading it might get shut down or moved.

A side by side tasting of Citra, JO, and 5th anniversary would amazing. Too bad it will never happen. If it were to happen, one of them will have fallen off and be far from a fair comparison.

Rare IPAs tend to be the ones that are DONG's... a la Pliny the Younger, Mango Mama, Exponential Hoppiness, and now Ephraim. Personally, my favorite ones regardless of rarity tend to be from Hill Farmstead and Alpine.

I agree with another poster here though... just focus on drinking the freshest ones... its not like you can cellar the rare IPAs that you find.

Expo being a DONG or not is still up in the air. It's definitely an NG, but maybe not a DO yet. It might end up a DONGBYCGB ( draft only no growlers but you can get bombers )

    Mine is catchier.

Wouldn't draft only imply no bottling though?

Rare IPAs tend to be too hard to get since the bottle count is lower and people drink them fresh. Kern Citra was great but maybe not worth the trouble. Row 2 Hilll 56 is good and shouldn't be too hard to get, but really you should just get some Head Hunter!
