I live in Golden, Co, five miles downstream from Coors. In their wisdom, Molson-Coors has abandon my two favorites. 1. Henry Weinhard Private Reserve, 2. Coors Extra Gold.

I would appreciate recommendations for replacements along the same lines. I understand that the Private Reserve used cascade hops.

    Thx.

I drank Henry Weinhard's maybe 40 years ago when I lived in Oregon. Frankly just about any IPA/Pilsner or similar can be just as good

Go to the Golden Hotel and try a Herman Joseph's on tap. You won't be disappointed. Also, there are a few spots in Golden that offer Barmen's on tap as well, again, you won't be disappointed.

Sorry to not be much help but I've never actually had either of those beers, but how would you describe them or what would you compare them to. I'm extra curious about the extra gold

Do you get Full Sail Session Lager in Golden. That would nicely replace both those.
If you can get the cans.

I can help you replicate Extra Gold. It's essentially Coors Banquet with a small % of Killian's Irish Red blended in for color and a little character. I don't know the exact blend, but it's something akin to 90/10. You can make your own, or just switch to Banquet.

If you're seriously close to Golden, Barmen is available at several places in town. It's at all of the CO Yardhouse locations (or at least it was), too. That's probably the best beer Coors has ever made. A pour of that will make you forget everything else.

With Weinhard, I feel like someone told me that one of the AC Golden seasonals is really close. I haven't seen or had HWPR in so long, I have no idea which one, though.

This is why I'm fascinated by macros. They're so convoluted, yet have so many products coming out of one massive factory brewery. I mean who had the idea of putting 1.2oz of Killians into a bottle of Banquet.

To be fair I've never actually seen extra gold, but I've had both the beers that make it.

Extra Gold was only sold in a few states for its final years. At the end it might've even been a CO exclusive. I don't think I saw it in anything less than a case since 2017'ish.

The concept was vestige from the "gold" beer trend of the mid/late 90's. The different large breweries went back and forth copying each other (dry, red, ice, gold, etc.) at the time. Kinda like they do these days with low-carb and seltzer, but maybe a little more inspired. Still, it was probably easier to blend existing products rather than to make something entirely new. The trend died a long time ago and sales probably did, too, so they just finally killed it.

Granted, I haven't had either the Extra Gold or Henry's in ages, but I would think the FS session lager would be a bit too rich and flavorful for someone who is a fan of those beers. Also, I always felt that Henry's had a touch more bitterness/crispness in the finish (presumably from the Cascade hops?).

Not that I'm any sort of expert when it comes to macros, but I think @Domingo's suggestion is probably the best one (just switch over to regular Coors banquet beer).

Personally, the last time I had the Extra Gold I thought it was a pretty uninspired AAL, but each to their own.
