Well, if one factors in state ares, California is similar to the area of NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, MD, & DE. combined, and the geographical center of this group is a shorter distance than CA. My point being, we can make different logic work to favor different outcomes.

I think the intent of this drive would be defeated by such efforts, and future drives can accommodate different measures. Another, and very difficult measure, would be by metropolitan regions. ha ha.

Cali has large numbers, but is also very large physically.

As of the numbers earlier when I posted the per capita numbers, the best combination of total numbers, large population to draw new members from, and concentrated geography is New England + Mid Atlantic, which would include plenty of excellent breweries, lots of society members, and a number of major cities, including NYC and Philadelphia.

Have the first one in Bean-town (peak fall colors preferred.)
But, then have a rule that it can't be repeated in the same region.
Makes it a fair fight... and an incentive to join.

So here's an alternative to the per-capita approach.

The percentage of society members over the standard members, with a minimum threshold of standard members. This encourages both recruiting new members and society upgrades.

I kind of like this variation on per capita with a minimum threshold.

Can someone tell me if being a Society Member is an annual charge? I just got billed $19.99 on my credit card and I don't know why, but it seems like it's about a year since I joined?

This is the best idea if it isn't too much hassle.

I have to admit, I'm really enjoying the fact that you picked this up and ran with it.

Even with California in last place amongst eligible contenders, this still feels fair.

It's a great alternative. Thanks for suggesting it!

Off to email users in IL, NY, TX, PA, OH, FL, and CA. I can't believe that they're going to let MA win!

If you want to increase membership, and CA has a huge population but relatively lower per capita membership, why wouldn't you host an event IN CA to advertise BA and potentially bring a lot of new membership? This seems like the most obvious recruiting location. Otherwise, it seems like you would be preaching to the choir. I really think CA needs something in order to stimulate membership and participation.

It'd be too easy to pick California. That said, I live in California and we do plan on hosting future events.

I agree! Visiting Antartica has long been on my bucket list. Work done there needs much more attention and support. Besides, I'm a an active, retired, beer loving scientist and I'd be happy to donate between $1 or 5$ to a GoFundMe account with the purpose to send you a case of your favorite (or better) craft beer which you might even share a bit with other Antarctica migratory residents. Let me know. -Daniel

Ha! Unless that's some odd urban dictionary term that's flying right over my head, I'm thinking that y'all not knowing what state you're in might be an issue.

That and/or apparently bots don't pay Society dues.

Massachusetts wins. Next step: plan the gathering; dates, venues, etc.

In the meantime, we're open to your ideas on how we can collectively select future gathering locations to ensure that we spread them around. (Discussion continued in the Society forum.)

Thanks to everyone who recently signed up!
