Last night many beers were drank. Mostly my DIPA and Hefe. Then as a treat to myself I opened up a Founder's Imperial Stout. I really liked KBS but to me, the FIS kicked it's ass. Just my tastes I guess. Anyway, it got me thinking that I really enjoyed the big roastyness without the usual 'twang' that follows.
The Founder's site gives no info. Most everyone else is interested in FBS or KBS clones.

I generally hate doing "clones" but if any one has one or has tips for something similar, I sure would appreciate it.

I emailed the brewery a couple years ago and was very pleased to get the following reply:

"glad to hear you enjoy our Imperial Stout, it’s one of my favorites as well. I throw a lot of grains into this one, most noticeably Munich (7%), C-80 (6%), Black malt, Roast Barley, Chocolate malt and Flaked Barley (4% each). I bitter it with Nugget and flavor/finish with Perle, targeting 100 IBUs. Target a 25 Plato OG and ferment it with some American Ale yeast. Hope this helps!"

I've brewed this recipe and I can tell you it's awesome. The only change I made was that I used Wyeast 1084 instead of 1056 as I am fond of 1084's character in dark beers.

I had the Dark Horse smoked stout last week and it reminded me of FIS. Maybe throw in a little of some smoked malt.

I like this one considerably more than KBS, CBS, or BS. Their best stout by far. That recipe looks good.
