Wow! If the suggested retail is $240 your retailer made out like a bandit. But maybe other places will also add a huge mark-up. I'll be curious to hear other prices.

Make sure to bring a couple credit cards and real estate trust deeds, stopping at the ATM for cash wouldn't hurt and signing over your first born may be required also

I think my steadfast rule for this one is to not pay more than $250.

Yes, I want to try it and have a bottle around for occasions, but not for more than $250.

It was at one of those early BA fests at the Cyclerama where I saw Jim Koch speaking.

(Mind you, the Sam Adams Triple Bock had been the highest ABV beer until Dogfish Head World Wide Stout moved past it, and then Utopias happened).

Someone from the audience asked him why he sells Utopias for $140+/- a bottle when Dogfish is selling the WWS for (like) $11 a bottle and he replied "Because I can".

    NOPE!

    Well, he can.

Also the process behind Utopias and WWS are not really comparable.

I found 2 places that got a small allocation in Nashville. But both are sitting on them and you have to watch their Instagram/Social Media spots for how they'll release. Bummer!

Well I just bit. $249 at Yankee Spirits, apparently the last bottle in the Norwood MA store. If nothing else, the bottle looks attractive!

Well, I've always thought that Utopias (and, I guess, other limited/rare beers and other alcohol beverages) does seem to be a way around laws meant to prevent favoritism and bribery/illegal payoffs.

Think about it, BBC or other brewers can't "pay to play" but if you were a liquor store with $500 to spend and were "offered" (based on whatever formula the company and distributor have developed) a case - 4@ IIRC - of Utopias wholesale that you could sell way above the MSRP rather than a pallet of, say, Budweiser that you'll have to sell at the going rate with the standard mark-up that all your competitors are selling it at...

And it's called capitalism, which mostly made this country to be what it is today (bandits included).

I picked up a bottle of WWS for $12.99. That's $1.08 an ounce. Pricey. But hey, you only live once. I'll post it on WBAYDN when I crack it open.

True, true  but, if I recall my political and brewing industry history, Karl Marx was dead when the US Congress (containing hardly any socialists at the time, tho' some would still dispute that) passed the post-Repeal FAA Act which includes all sorts of Trade Practices Laws and Regulations that'd drive Adam Smith to drink...
If, one assumes, the few retailers who can buy Utopias (and then sell it for more than twice the wholesale price) are given that ability based on the quantity of other Boston Beer products they buy...well, I'm no lawyer...

Legally, Utopias is a "malt beverage" and, at the Federal level, BBC pays the same Federal Excise Tax that is charged to US breweries at their barrelage level:
So, that's around 20¢ on the 25 oz. bottle of SAU.

New York State's excise tax on beer is additional 14¢/gallon. Even if New York charged BBC the "Spirits" tax rate (unlikely) it would only add around a buck and half to that bottle of Utopias. Taxes on alcohol are almost universally based on volume (per barrel or gallon, etc) and, less often, on alcohol content - not on retail price. Now sales tax at the retail level... that's another story.

Thanks for pointing that out. Price gouging for sure. But my friend in SC wanted one and couldn't get it there. I won't buy one in 2023.

But that's not based on tax rate as such but (like most of the other states which ban the sale of Utopias) on South Carolina's limit on beer ABV.
---- Samuel Adams’ new Utopia beer packs potent punch. Why you won’t find it in NC or SC

Are people finding the beer finder to be accurate? Its not showing up around in any pa or ohio zips yet so am wondering if thats accurate or there is a latency period before the beer finder shows it.

While I was sitting at Wren House in Phoenix and calling Craft Beer Stores to see if they had it, another patron sitting next to me said he JUST had it at Yard House nearby. I went and, yes, Utopia 2021 was there. 2 oz pour. Very cherry/sherry, raisin, booze hidden. Reminded me of a smooth brandy.

Utopia is way out of my price range, but if anyone between Scranton, PA & Syracuse, NY is looking for a bottle the owner of West Side Beer Depot in Binghamton said he has two bottles left at $269 each.

I told him I'd have to think about a $20 bottle of Xocoveza charred so he started trying to sell me a $270 Utopia 「(゚ペ)

Back in 2016 got to try Utopias on cherries at FOBAB. They were pouring 2oz samples and surprisingly there was no line. Everyone was busy lining up for BCBS. I recall it drank more like port or a scotch, even. Made the $65 festival ticket worth it.

If you would give that to me without any explanation I would never call it a beer. I am glad I got the chance to try it but it's not worth it to me spending $240 a bottle.
I heard that 8 bottles were sold in the first 30 minutes the taproom had opened on Saturday.

I'm certainly interested. Although I can't see paying price for a bottle just like I don't spend that much for the few bottles of bourbon I buy.

If I was out at a bar, maybe I would buy sample if available

A lot of people do. Their prices are out of control. It is just frustrating. I mean, even with shipping charges, I might actually buy from them occasionally if just (1) things like IPAs were fresh and (2) they didn’t completely up charge the up charge.
