Samuel Adams Throwback Pack

This is an automatic buy.

Although I believe they have their Irish Red (or a version of it) on tap at the brewery most days.

In fact, aside from Noble Pils, I feel like I’ve seen the other three on tap there from time to time.

 

Taking a page out of Saranac’s book, they did the same with old labels and all too. I really hope this catches on more and more places.

I don’t know if I ever found a link but while it was around I grabbed two of them. Post below from me in “oldies but goodies thread” and subsequent discussion is in there if you didn’t see it in the thread.

They must have sold well around here cause most are gone, a few older ones lingering. They showed up here in late January I think. Bottles in it has late June BB dates.

I loved the Noble Pils and was bummed when they discontinued it so I’ll definitely buy this just to get some.

 

I kind of wonder how something like Noble Pils and Double Bock would do today considering how many breweries now focus on lagers.

 

I wonder too, but I also wonder how many people would overlook it or turn their heads to it because it is Sam Adams and not...insert currently trending popular lager brewery.

 

Noble Pils was awesome when it first came out. Did so well as a spring seasonal they made it year-round.

Thing is, I was just beginning to really get into lagers back then (2009 is when it came out). As I dug deeper, and learned more on this site, it became less awesome to me. I sought out the better imports and really dug into the details of what makes a lager great. Even traveled to Germany for the first time due to this love back in 2011.

There was such a dearth of good lager in the Northeast back then, Noble Pils was a revelation at the time. My beloved Notch only opened in 2010, and they were contract brew only, with a Pils and an Ale, that was it.

@steveh I recall the issue with Noble Pils is that they sort of just jammed all five Noble hops into a Pilsner, and it made the hop profile a bit muddled. Still a decent beer, but I'm not sure it will stick out compared to some people's local favorite Pilsners in 2023.

 

Curious - is the version you get today as good as it was back in the day. This can be hard to judge.

I am always worried that over time, especially when a beer is discontinued for a few years, that the brewer comes back with a slightly different recipe, not really the same taste, and cheaper to make.

 

Hard to judge or impossible to judge...Half will say yes half will say no...happens every time a beer is rebrewed...

However; I like to think that breweries like Sam Adams, etc. who actually have real QA would end up brewing them as close to what they were, unless the recipe was changed, I do not know if this is the case with these beers since the only info we have up to this point is the beers themselves.

I just want to reiterate and add that I hope this becomes a trend we see more of, now that makes two northeast breweries doing this...Saranac and Sam...who do we see next and will this become a yearly thing for them?

 

Sounds good to me! I would prefer the triple Bock to the Honey Porter!

 

Yee I don’t get the Sam’s hate. They make some pretty good stuff that is widely accessible and is also a good gateway itno craft.

I will say my personal barrier to buying a lot of Sam’s is that is freakin expensive. At my Costco a 24 count variety pack is 34 dollars, where as most of the craft stuff is 29.99 for a case. I do keep Boston lager in stock as it’s the one of the few beers my wife likes

 

How does she feel about the Remastered version?
