This is not the going price, right? I was thinking I'd seen this elsewhere (even in town) for $10-11 a 4-pk. This is not at all a shady establishment (I just bought a BCBS there a few weeks ago at $20 and change). Do you think this is some mixup in the system that I should ask about, or is this the going rate for this year's vintage?

No I think it's around $14 a four pack. It's not that great either.

you know, when you're talking about a small, family-owned brewery like Goose, they have to ask slightly higher prices for their products to cover overhead. It's not like they're producing billions and billions of gallons of beer a year...

    ...oh wait.

Well, as I don't intend to buy any anyway, I didn't wanna really look like a dick or 'that guy', though I guess if the price were corrected, they might blow through their stock a lot quicker...

I was forced to buy a 4-pack of GI Christmas ($10.50), in order to be allowed to buy BCBS. The guy said "that's what they made us do." He was talking about the distributor I'm assuming.

    Oh, I don't mind being that guy,a dick; it's just how I am ;):) .
I am used to shopping at Shangy's where you almost always need to ask for the price of a case of beer for the stacks along the wall which are like NEVER marked.

Your opinion is completely wrong it is a good beer and at a great price.

Also to the OP, they store must of thought it was Bourbon County Christmas Ale/Stout.

I think I would have walked out the door. Haven't seen this personally yet, but thinkin it is a common form of extortion. Store won't have the Christmas beer hanging around for Halloween, I suppose.

And did you actually pay $20 for 1 BCBS? Hopefully not a 12oz'er - they are six fifty here.

My guess is that it's the store. In most cases, the store can do whatever they want with a product once they purchase it from the distributor. I know that the distributors can make their accounts buy a certain amount of a product before they send them the limited-release stuff, but they have no control over what a store does with it beyond that. I could be wrong. It probably varies from state to state.

If you can find 2011 Christmas ale on the shelves still (you probably can) get it. It's drinking great right now.

I don't get the hate for this years batch. If you specifically don't like the style, that's one thing, but to say that beer isn't good is a pretty weird statement.

I think he's saying that the distributor made him buy Xmas to get BCS so he's doing the same to his customers so he doesn't get stuck with it since the market for xmas basically dies on 12/26.

It's shitty to do to your good customers, but it's certainly not unheard of. Especially at smaller shops.

Odd. I saw the exact same thing at a grocery store in Omaha Nebraska on December 15th. I told the seemingly-knowledgeable beer guy that it must be a mix-up with BCBS and the Xmas ale should be around 10 bucks. He insisted it was correct. Guess which 4-pack I bought for $20.89?

So $20.89 means the store in question is mis-pricing GI X-Mas. I will say however, that GI pricing is really crazy in general, at least in DC.

That has got to be wrong. I paid $7.99 for a 4pk less than a week ago.

Shadow Lake mall in Papillion. Didn't see anything else unreasonably priced and was impressed with their selection.

Sure. Curious if it's still sitting there for $21. Gotta be an error. So odd the OP saw the same price on this too. Maybe a distributor error? Did these GI 4-packs hit shelves at the same time. Could explain the pricing confusion?

I know in the Des Moines metro, stores have it marked down to $4/4 pack. $20 is laughable!!!!

I found it for $5.99 the day it came to Minnesota. At $20.89 the guy is either mistaken or trying to scam people by putting it next to BCBS and making it appear like Christmas Ale is another rare offering from GI. If you were a rookie and didn't know better you might make the mistake.

This beer used to be sold at the same price point as the rest of their beers, and was one of my favourites and would cellar wonderfully for a lower ABV ale. At the price point now it's a complete rip off and i will not purchase it.

At that point make the buy, and without leaving the counter demand to return the Xmas. When questioned say it's because of.your severe allergy to mercenary bullshit.

Also, not sure if GI cares, but some distributors can make aheadache for stores who pull shit like that
Some smaller breweries can also make a headache for distributors who encourage it.or turn a blind eye. Could be worth calling and complaining about.

Great suggestion! I have never been in the position, forced to buy beer x to get beer y, but there is no way the store could deny such a request. Thanks for the idea, if/when I ever face that BS, I know what I will do...

I don't expect the suggestion to work. I expect it to cause trouble in the store. Returns are a pain in the ass, as is arguing with a customer. Do it enough and it deincentivizes (sp?) The practice. If you expected a shitstorm whenever you did this, you'd be less likely to do it.
