I’ve had both from the barrel and while very similar there are some slight differences as with a single barrel bourbon product. Both are really, really good, imo.

 

I assumed they had to be somewhat different in flavor profile. Kind of a cool concept and a fun side-by-side, although not at $150 + tax.

 

I have never been someone to say “is the quality that much better to justify the price”, but that is what I am doing here. I don’t normally ask that question, because I am someone who can taste the difference in food, beer and whiskey quality, and so on. For example, when people say, “OMG, Weller is the same mash bill as VW - W12 and Lot B taste the same” or “Larceny BP is almost the same as Weller”. Nope. People are either lying to themselves, because they benefit from that cognitive dissonance, or their palate isn’t as good. BUT, what stands out to me about how this case is different is two things:

First, when I say this I am nearly always comparing apples to oranges - beers from one brewery to beers of another, or a limited whiskey to a more easily obtainable whiskey. Or even a high quality dairy product to a Kroger brand. (I’ve had people say all milk tastes the same, and those people have absolutely insane). BUT, here we are talking about beers from Side Project only (comparing a silent barrel with other non-adjunct stout releases).

Second, we are talking about a $75 “single serving” beer. Single serving being that 12oz is the common serving size. Nearly double the price of many of their other beers, which are already at the top-end of the market, price wise.

It’s hard for me to imagine this being a justifiable $75 purchase. Even harder to imagine justifying $150 for both. That’s 2 beers or 30-50% of the amount to buy (at near secondary pricing) a limited, world class whiskey bottle, like THH, 4RLESmB, RR15. People use the whiskey to beer value all the time, and yet we still buy beer, but the $75/150 price in one pull is egregious.

 

How many LC only Silent Barrel beers have been released so far?

 

Idk about LC only but these are LC picks numbers 3 and 4.

 

I'm torn on the sale today. Biggest issue is I don't think the single barrels play into Side Project's strengths, which is the blending and the depth of flavor that comes from it. The handful of silent barrel's I've had (798, 925, 568, 587) were fun to try but not as complex and enjoyable as the majority of their blended stouts. Throw in the price point and man, just hard to justify. As a big Prince fan though, the purple wax of barrel 1110 might be too much to pass up. Damn it.

Don't blame SP for the pricing, blame the people tripping over themselves to throw $75 at a single serving of beer. This beer drinker won't be participating in today's lunacy.

The purple wax showed at "sold out" for me for like 30 seconds without the other bottle popping up - then they were both there not sold out - then purple was gone again - what a mess.
