My favorite small beer town has got to be Durango, CO. So far it's got the most brweries per capita in. North America. And ska brewing makes my favorite ipa. Mmmmmm, modus.
Well, I used to think they had the most breweries per capita anyway.

Old Mill Brewpub just opened about 2 blocks from me in Lexington, SC. They have about 32 beers on tap so far, including Founders Breakfast stout. And in June, they will be getting their equipment running to brew their own. I hope it works out for them. (And me!)

I kind of forgot about them, partly because I never knew exactly what they were. I remember the name was a revival of a long closed and mostly forgotten brewery, and started as a contract brand, then I kind of lost track.

Breinigsville, PA, population is 7,595 and is home to BBC's "Samuel Adams Pennsylvania Brewery" which pumps out probably over a million and a half barrels a year.:grinning:

About the same size town, Baldwinsville, NY (pop. 7375) with a brewery about five times bigger than that, with a capacity 7.5m bbl/yr.

Seems to me there are a lot here in New England that would qualify as breweries in small towns. I think the question kind of overlaps with distribution to some extent. There's a small brewery that just opened up in Berkley, MA that only has distribution to a handful of restaurants in the area. Small town, small brewery, small geographical distribution.

I happen to think that the "local brewery" is something that could be a very viable part of beer's future.

Holy crap, I saw the title of the thread and thought "I have to mention that new brewery in Holgate."
I grew up in Napoleon, right up around Co Rd 14 and Z if you know the area. Technically it's considered Flatrock Township. Never thought I would see that brewery mentioned on the BA forums.
    Cheers!

As far as little known, small town breweries, I would have to give a nod to Riverport Brewing in Clarkston, WA. There's another brewery across the river in Lewiston, but that place makes god-awful beer.

Indian Wells and Kern River. Close to each other, similar size small towns, and yet, worlds apart in terms of quality.

Ruby Mountain in NE Nevada is pretty rural. It has a population of zero pretty much. Its PO Box is in Wells, but its actual location is quite a few miles from Wells (which is super tiny and rustic anyways).
