I think he means jersey shore tan. I think Eastwood tan is more accurate though if you take texture into account. It definitely does I can pick out the off flavors from tobacco. I wash my hands a lot, try not to smoke before tasting or until after inebriation is attained. I've quit for three months and did notice a difference, not a huge one but three months isn't exactly a long time.

I can't help it cigarettes keep me from choking people.

I quit smoking and dipping before I really got into beer, but I'm heading to the store right now for a pack and a can of Cope to do an experiment.

Moderation in everything. Nothing wrong with a smoke every now and then. I love a cohiba and single malt together, one of life's little pleasures

I'm not a smoker, but I am more interested in what is this metallic taste the OP found? I'm familiar enough with the Duchesse to say that I've never noticed anything akin to sucking on pennies, as someone else put it. Any other brews where this is a dominant flavor / sensation? Or is a cigarette+sour beer reaction, something like how toothpaste will make orange juice taste horrible?

Your smell and palate really open up once you quit smoking. I could only imagine how it COULD have been if I never had a smoke. I quit over ten years ago and wow what a difference it makes! Oh. to effectively quit smoking, you HAVE to quit drinking first (gasp). REALLY helps! ok. it worked for me.

Man, I got one of those. Mostly I have it on me for situations where smoking is a definite no-go (theaters, enclosed parties, airport bathrooms), and I have a friend who recently switched completely to them after 10 years of Marlboro reds. I figure before I turn 30 and start taking the life thing seriously I'll switch to them before quitting completely, but in the meantime it's a sad imitation...Replacing the good burn with a vapor flavor that usually ends up tasting like butterscotch.

You know, I've gotten it from a number of other brews, and I know there's been other forum topics addressing it as a faulty preparation issue - minerals in the water, untreated metal brewing vessels, even bottle cap metal leaching into it. But it also seems like certain people taste it where others don't, so it could end up being a personal palate thing. I know I've tasted it in a number of stouts, and Stella always had that little twinge at the end, but I hadn't really encountered it in many sours before. Maybe you're one of the lucky ones that can't taste it.

The menthol ones are much better. Still not as good as the real thing, but they actually taste OK.

I need to get my hands on some more then, because without the penny infusion it's fucking delicious.

I'm pretty sure Tom Waits is the only way to drink a barrel-aged beer.

I wish. I get "metallic" from breads/baked goods all the time. I'm assuming it's from baking powder that didn't get incorporated properly, or from certain blends of gluten-free flour. Might be a different kind of metallic as I don't have much experience in sucking on pennies. (At least not recently.)

I am a bit of a cigar conisseur and enjoy one every now and then but I never mix smoking them with my enjoyment of beer. I find when I do I may as well just be drinking a Bud as all I taste is crap. And I make sure I never smoke a cigar within 24 hours of going out to Papagos or any place to drink good beer as it absolutely destroys my ability to enjoy the beer to its fullest.

Oh, absolutely agree on you there. Smoking while drinking even the most extreme IPA completely declaws it.

I gotta say, after my initial IPA binge, stouts were a total eye-opener to me. It's funny, though: after working through the Belgians and trappists and lambics and other styles, my all-around favorites now are nicely complicated sours, like Jolly Pumpkin or flanders bruns. Not exactly the most appetizing with a smoke, but fuckin' delicious all the same.
I understand supertasters are less likely to be smokers because of their increased sensitivity to bitterness. Wondering if that extends to IPAs or that good 'ol brett funk. Or the other way around: smokers being more likely to latch onto the darker styles, like you said, or more funky, bitter or strange tastes. Hmmmm.

Agree that cigarettes are disgusting, but having said that, I enjoy pipes and cigars on occasion and find that they do not interfere with my enjoyment of craft beer. I have found that cigars go wonderfully with bourbon barrel aged stouts and pipes filled with tangy Virginia tobacco goes well with IPA's. Also, I have never ever ever gotten a complaint from anyone while smoking a pipe.

I think it's all about moderation and totality of one's lifestyle. This is coming from someone who has never touched a cigarette, but in today's nanny society, I can totally respect someone else's choice and right to do so. The late great beer writer Michael Jackson once wrote that there's nothing like a Thomas Hardy Ale with a nice cigar after dinner......who am I to argue with MJ? :-)

I really like IPAs, but I find most of the single IPAs have a metallic taste that comes from cigarettes probably.. I like almost any imperial IPA (except Sucks). I smoke when drinking IPAs too, but it doesn't affect big stouts, barleywines, Belgians, or sours. Or a good old bmc for that matter.
