Off topic, but my father died two weeks ago, losing his battle with lung cancer. He smoked less than a half a pack a day and quit 13 years ago.

Don't kid yourself. Your losing far more than your taste.

I got into craft beer after I quit smoking cigs two and a half years ago. My smell was the first to come back then the tongue.

I'm a casual smoker. Sometimes I'll smoke 10 a day, sometimes none. I try and hold off as long as possible when drinking to smoke a cigarette, but once I start, then I'm not going to stop until bed. That being said, I find cigs don't ruin stouts or porters for me at all and actually enjoy the combo, esp coffee stouts. There's plenty other reasons my senses aren't what they should be, but I've never had a great sense of smell, so that has always made my palate weaker too.

Duchesse is one of the few beers I've had where I've wished I was a smoker so I didn't have to taste what I was drinking.

I am a heavy cig smoker. I know that when I have laid off, that beer, burgers and ***** tastes so much better. It ain't easy quittin'. It's easy to say "Get a grip! You're an addict!" but it isn't that simple. Or is it? Dunno.

I smoke 2-3 cigarettes on most days. If I'm going to drink a nice, expensive or harder-to-come-by beer, I won't smoke for at least a few hours before drinking. I know it's not the same as quitting smoking altogether, but I find that it helps improve my smell and taste to at least avoid smoking immediately before drinking.

    that's a good joke.

well, actually, if someone is smoking a cigarette while they walk down the street, it's not making anyone else around them sick. if they smoke all the time at home it may make their family sick... just as providing a bad food atmosphere with no understanding of nutrition and only buying unhealthy trash and feeding it to your family does.

    Patently untrue.

+1 to a dramatic improvement in taste after I quit. I was smoking almost a pack a day for about six or seven years, now I have the occasional cigarette with alcohol.

Slightly off topic, but hopefully it's alright: those dramatic "Truth" commercials seem to make people hate smokers a lot more than try to get smokers to quit. I think that laying down the evidence about quitting is a much more effective national ad campaign than something like "look how many people cigarettes kill directly and indirectly every minute!" How about telling people that chemical addiction to nicotine can be eliminated in as little as three days? Or that quitting smoking is 99% psychological? Or that quitting smoking is a financially sound decision? Treating smokers like they're murderers doesn't seem to be getting anyone anywhere.

the truth campaigns are pretty bad, but it's definitely a good thing to tell the truth about smoking. i'm all for doing what you want to do, but that's no reason to pretend that smoking won't mess up your lungs / etc.

yeah, it actually is that simple. if you want to quit...quit. will it suck for a while? yeah! but who is in control here...you, or the cigarette?

Yeah, I just wish they didn't treat smokers like they were bad people. A more compassionate approach, IMO, would be so much better. Something like, "here's how to quit" rather than "look at how awful you are."

You are completely, totally "right on". It comes down to "Do I let this thing whoop me arse or not"? You are spot-on.

    Very cool avatar, btw.
