Not much of a surprise when you have options like Garrison City and Chapel & Main right in that roundabout. Can Dover support another brewery in that location? It's still quite nice on the inside with that long bar with lots of wood and bricks.

Smuttynose themselves is still going, though, right?

I am sorry, I miss old Suttynose and have the t-shirt to prove it, but that was a stupid name. Hey honey let's take the kids to Smuttlabs for dinner!

I had never been to Smuttlabs: really enjoy the Smutty Hampton taproom and restaurant and that location is much more convenient to my drives up to Maine than Dover, so there's no reason to go out of my way. Just looked at the Google photos and the place and food looked nice too. But yeah as @tavernakhione mentions above, this is not an underserved area.

Haha true, Smuttlabs sounds like a pornographic movie studio or something.

Ah, bummer. We end up in Dover a bunch in the summer for sports. Smutty always kind of finished in second place for options. Ice cream nearby was good, there’s a great soccer bar (as in EPL, etc.) in town called The June Cork. Buckets of Narragansett. Ended up there twice in two weeks. I’ll go back for World Cup for sure.

But I digress. I feel badly about Smuttys decline. I drank a lot of their beers in my past as a beer drinker (Robust Porter being my jam)

Sad to see one go down but I agree it’s hard to compete with Garrison and Chapel right there. The parking options weren’t as good either.

I hate to say it but I’m sure empty pint is struggling as well.

I won't mind the brewery and kitchen being shuttered at all but I will lightly mourn the brand itself being discontinued. They brewed a lot of dogs over the years but they had a few winners, too and, crappy or otherwise, it was always fun seeing what they thought would be a good idea.

Nearby Bad Labs went out of business as well (not as recent though).

Bad lab had put some money into that spot as well. I didn't realize they had closed. It's been years since I had stopped by. Too many other options. Earth Eagle is probably absorbing any of the leftover customers.

I had no idea empty pint even existed until I was walking to the train station. Empty pint, empty brewery is what it was compared to a bustling Garrison.

Same. They were "MY" brewery in College. My roommates were drinking whatever was cheap and I was hoarding my Smutty mixed 12 pack. I think I drank my weight in Old Brown Dog about 20 times over, and then a fair amount of Finestkind and Big A (which for the love of god, if they brewed it again I'd probably buy multiple cases.)

My understanding is that Smuttynose is still going but Smuttlabs is done. But I agree, Big A IPA was great and I loved most Smuttynose beers 10+ years ago.

I still, to this day, say Durty was/is one of my favorite beers ever.

Can't disagree, maybe it wouldn't hold up today but if I were to rank "best tasting beers in the moment" that would rank high up there.

That and Swamp Yankee by Buzzard's Bay were similar beers I could drink all day awhile ago.

One of the first, if not the first, IPAs I had was Finest Kind.

I distinctly remember that grapefruit character and thinking, “Wow, this is beer?”

If I had the $$$ I spent on mix 12pks. and Big Beer Series!
Shoals Pale and Portsmouth Lager for life....!
    Big A and Finestkind.

Baltic Porter should be in beer hall of fame.
    Bring back IMPERIAL STOUT!!

Sadly, just purchased a 12pk. pumpkin ale and they changed it from a pumpkin ipa to a darker, fuller, less carbonated sweeter, mess. Not cool.

Super hard to find fresh smuttynose as it is. Bummer.

Another moral of the story is making consistent beer across generations is hard. Numerous forces such as a lot of industry turnover, marketing folks, trends in beer and/or alcoholic beverages as a whole, etc. that pull in the direction of not maintaining a consistent "brand".
  21. AlcahueteJ

    AlcahueteJ Dec 4, 2004 Massachusetts

    Definitely true.

But...Smutty started in 1994. Allagash started in can combat that with consistently great beer and a solid business plan (kind of obvious statements, but still).

Yeah when things were fine Smuttlabs was supposed to be their experimental/specialty series. I can agree probably not best name for a restaurant. Beer speaks though, if it’s up to par.

I emailed them a couple years ago asking if they have any plans for a return of Baltic Porter and IS. Received a quick reply of no plans.

Shame so many good recipes aren’t being used nowadays.

    Robust Porter
OG Finestkind ( current version is a mess)

Used to adore the old Short Batch Series, so many treats.
