Just opened one of my several Southampton RIS 2012 bottles and to my surprise it was not an imperial stout in the bottle. A reddish pour had me confused right away. Once it was in my glass it was clear something was wrong - a reddish looking beer with a sediment that smelled and tasted like a kriek/lambic. Is this a Southampton BRL available at the same release mislabled as RIS you might asked? I dunno. One thing is for sure - it ain't RIS! This was bottle 495 and upon putting my sealed SH RIS bottle 487 to the light it is quite clear to me that it ain't RIS either. Did anyone who go to the release and got bottles of RIS have similiar experience? I will be contacting Southampton soon but wanted to know if anyone else experienced the same thing. Cheers.

Haven't opened any of my 2012 RIS bottles yet, so I don't know if mine have the same issue. I definitely wouldn't mind if it was accidentally more of the Black Raspberry Lambic though, that beer is crazy good.

Very interesting. Sounds like some Black Raspberry Lambic ended up with RIS labels... Even if the RIS was infected, the body wouldn't end up looking red. I went down into the cellar and compared my bottles of RIS to Black Raspberry Lambic. Same bottles, same cork style, just different labels and foil color. I also held the bottles up to a light. You can't see through the RIS bottles, but you can see the reddish color of the Black Raspberry Lambic.

There was a bottle that was opened up a Pinocchio's a month or two ago right after the release that had this happen. I know that Lauren (Thoreaulikeagirl) was there and took a picture of this. I think she contacted Southampton, but I haven't heard if there was any feedback or resolution.

I saw this picture and heard from Lauren that Southampton replaced the bottle. She also mentioned that it wasn't the Black Rasberry Lambic, but instead a completely different beer. This makes me tempted to open one.

Just now I held up a 2011 (#98) and 2012 (#94) to the light and they both are dark as night and look identical. I still have a few other 2012 in the cellar so I'll check them later.

My highest bottle # is 247. Maybe I should be glad I got all low #'s. Or maybe I want to try that Cherry Lambic...

Yeah, I had BRL at the release on tap and this RIS kriek I had last night tasted different. That is why I was hesitant to call it such. My sealed bottle 487 is reddish under the light and is definitely a kriek. I would say abv on this mystery beer was 5%-6% range. I am yet to check my other bottles. Too bad cause I was really in the mood for an ris last night. I have a couple of kriek picks on my cell phone. If anyone wants them I can text them.

I have bottle 452 and it seems to look ok. The bottle is dark enough that it makes it tough to tell for sure, though.

I opened bottle #549 with my brother last night and it was definitely a stout

Nice to know that even the pros can do what I have done with homebrew, lose track of what is in bottle.

That said, wish I had either that kriek-looking one, or what was supposed to be in the bottle, they both sound really tasty.

My friend had the same thing happen at our recent stout tasting. He brought a bottle of the 'RIS' from the release, and much to our surprise, it was the Black Raspberry Lambic. He checked the remaining bottles that he had at home and noticed 2 more that appeared lighter in color. He contacted Southampton and they shipped him replacement bottles for those that were mislabeled.

I can only pray that my last RIS bottle is black raspberry lambic *crosses fingers*

The rest I traded away and I have'nt heard from anyone to know whether or not they were labeled incorrectly.

It sounds like it is not the Black Rasberry Lambic in the bottles.... but something else. Eitherway. I wish I had one to drink and then SH could replace it with a Stout. Win win
