Didnt see anything posted about this in the updated forum. I removed the silver foil from the top of my 750ml Speedway moments ago to find rust all around the edges of the cap. The underside of the cap appears to have a bit of rust on it as well. Any thoughts on this? Hate the idea of drain pouring this brew, but thought maybe it's a common issue on certain vintages and someone else has experienced this as well.

    Thanks

Sounds like a bit of Oxidation... It wouldn't hurt to try it. Probably means the bottle is a bit older.

Yeah, a sign of oxidation. Could you let us know what year you're drinking and how it is?

I've experienced this with a few beers from Avery and Great Divide, as well as Speedway, which had foil over the cap. I suspect it's just a matter of the foil holding moisture against the cap, causing it to rust. I didn't detect anything wrong with the beers.

Wish i knew the year, but the bottle doesn't seem to be dated. I don't notice any off flavors in the small portion I've consumed so far. Seems like its ok, hopefully a little rust won't cause any harm.

drink it- nothing in beer will kill you, and hey, you'll get your daily dose of ferric oxide.

Speedway Stout is undated, which is funny because it says something on the bottle about it being able to age for two years... Not sure how you're supposed to know if it's two years old with no bottle date.

Another reason I wish Alesmith did a Bottled on Date

A little rust never hurt anyone, just like lead. Am I right?

Had this happen with a bottle of El Cucuy which had wax over the cap, brew was mighty tasty. Wondered about it at first but later when donating blood they said I had a lot of iron in my diet.

Appreciate the responses. I figured it was new when I bought it, but you never know at certain portland bottle shops. Going to enjoy it and not look back!

    Thanks!

I believe it's due to the bottle being moist after the cap has been affixed and the foil going on without drying the bottle first. I have had this happen with numerous foil topped beers.
