We made a minor change to the dry-hop for Stone IPA back in late April, ultimately adding a little more hop complexity to the flavor. We thought the best way to discuss this update was to sit down with Stone CEO & co-founder Greg Koch, co-founder & Original Brewmaster Steve Wagner and former Brewmaster Mitch Steele…the folks who know Stone IPA best! So check out the video to learn about the full details directly from our beer professionals.

Why mix in so many hops in a standard range IPA

I wish they would just call it a different name. Shouldn't mess with the classics!

Would this already be in production runs? I just got the mix 24 case from Costco and I thought the Stone IPA tasted different/better to me. The Ruination 2.0 is off the charts yummy.

Yes. The recipe changed in the brewhouse in April. If your bottle was packaged late May of after then you are likely getting this new version! Either way, glad to hear you love whichever iteration of Stone IPA you are sipping on!

Well they did mention that like the 2.0 Ruination and Pale Ale, the 1.1 IPA will be a name change on the bottle label and box so you will know its the new one.

I'm guessing that they just realized that their IPA is probably not selling as well as the competitors more fruit hopped forward IPAs and also Stone's recent success of Enjoy By and Ruination 2.0, so they want to transition their existing IPA into more fruit forward hopped territory. In the video they mention that the hops are higher cost hops in IPA 1.1, but not sure if that increase in cost will be pushed to the consumer in price increase of the IPA?) Ruination and Enjoy By are very good but also very expensive store bought DIPAs.

Not to come across as negative above...I'm still very excited to try 1.1, since I've become a Stone fan with the 2.0 series on Pale and Ruination over their original formulas.

You've tried it then? Can you share what you liked less about it?

    No I havn't
My point is that throwing in 7 different hops dosen't make an IPA better
It could be interesting in a limited release, but no point in a standard range

I've gone through a sixer of 1.1 over the last few days and it's very good, but still decidedly old school - stiffly piney and bitter, with only subtle citrus, and maybe traces of some other fruit? Pretty classic west coast IPA flavor profile and I'm not sure I would have realized I was drinking a different beer if I didn't stumble across this post.

Oh, OK. You just don't like the idea. Well, if the brewmaster and owners of Stone all like the flavor better I'll reserve judgement until I've tried it. Thanks.

I homebrewed a La Cumbre Elevated IPA clone as best I could, and the recipe online was from @erway, the owner and head Brewer. It used 7 hops. I have had it a few times in New Mexico, and think it is outstanding, A GABF Gold winner a few years ago. I had to do some dry hop subs, as I have no J-17 from South Africa.

Another favorite is Two Hearted Ale. It has only Centennial hops.

So 7 hops works for me, as does one.

This new version of Stone IPA sounds intriguing; I look forward to trying it.

The packaged craft beer industry is getting more and more competitive and it seems to me that Stone Brewing Company is recognizing this situation and making some innovations.

Maybe they are taking something from the Sixpoint playbook!?!

    @Sixpoint

    Cheers!

Since Stone is in my regular rotation (Just had EB 7/25 with Tangerines, and Ruinten over the weekend, both outstanding as always I must say) I am definitely on the lookout for this. Been a few months since I drank the IPA so its time to throw it back in the mix. The Wussie Pilsner is pretty damn good as well if anyone here hasn't tried it yet. Cheers!

I am excited to try it! Stone is my favorite brewery, and I just had a very fresh ruination, and it was amazing! It may be the best ruination I have had. Maybe they changed the recipe on that one as well? Not that they needed to....

You know what, I'm going to give it a try. I am not going to knock before I try it. And you know what, I have a pretty decent clone recipe if it doesn't work and I get a bug for the original Stone IPA
