My eyes open wide at the mention of more hops....

Don't worry, there are other ways to figure out when your beer was bottled! Just in case something like this happens, we also etch the Julian Date (http://bit.ly/StoneJulianDate) on the bottle. This probably isn't helpful to you now (unless you took the bottle home from the restaurant, of course) but just in case it happens again, now you know!

What about the one brewed in Berlin
Is that the old one or new?

The Virginia Prototype is not very good, it just tastes bitter, hopefully that's not 1.1 or at least not the final version of what will be shipped out of the VA brewery.

1.1 is clearly labeled in white ink on the lower right hand corner on the bottle. Love it, as others have said, the citrus flavor on the hops really pops out on this one - more palate scraping.

The Berlin-brewed Stone IPA uses its own hop-blend based on resources available in that region of the world. It’s definitely still the iconic Stone IPA, just with its own combination of hops.

I thought I heard in an interview that Stone was tweaking the recipe for Stone IPA. If I recall Greg said it would be Stone IPA v 1.1. Has anyone seen it or tried it yet?

    thanks!

All the Stone IPA is now 1.1, has been since July.

I had one right before the change after not having it for a while and then the 1.1 last week, it is still clearly the core beer but now just a wee bit "fruity". It's still a classic West Coast fairly bitter hop bomb if that's your thing and they did a good job with the change...just enough that you know something is different but not enough that it's a whole new beer.

Everything released after May 2016 is v1.1 (which would include all cans, I think), I know some of the bottles I had said 1.1 on them. There is a thread on it here:

The change i s pretty small but I would have prefered they left it alone, at least they didn't completely fuck it up like they did with Ruination which IMO should have just been labeled as a completely different beer.

Thanks, and what exact combination is that?

You say it's based off the resources available in that region of the world. So does that mean your IPA is a spicy, earthy hopped IPA? Or do they have a way for you to grow the hops more in line with your American version?

I am confident that @StoneBrewingCo will chime in with a more complete answer but I would be willing to guess that Stone Berlin uses a fair bit of Mandarina Bavaria hops. Those hops are grown in Germany and they feature a pleasant citrus aroma/flavor.

The German hop growers are not 'sitting still'. They are producing new hops to compete in the competitive hoppy beer market. Hops like Huell Melon, Hallertau Blanc, etc.

    Cheers!

Hopping an IPA with Mandarina Bavaria and Huell Melon will be vastly different from any american hops

I respectfully disagree in the context of Mandarina Bavaria hops. I have had hoppy ales that featured Mandarina Bavaria hops and those beers tasted like American hoppy beers (APA, American style IPA). The aroma/flavor of those beers were similar to Cascade/Centennial hopped beers.

    Cheers!

Looking forward to try this release. Shamefully (My fair excuse being that I am in Europe) I've only tried Stone IPA a couple months ago.

    Cheers.

The hops in the Berlin-brewed Stone IPA are Magnum, Centennial and Mosaic. The result is still very much Stone IPA, but the more honed palates may be able to pick up the subtle differences between it and the US-brewed version.

Mandarina Bavaria pairs nicely with Hallertau Cascade. Yea, they grow Cascade in Germany.
