In all honesty this doesn't sound so good to me. Not every style benefits from aging in spirit barrels.

A black ipa is just a hopped up porter/stout in all reality. The hops fade during the barrel aging process and you are left with a barrel aged dark beer. At a viscous almost 9% this base beer will be awesome in barrels I think.

Sounds great! Hopefully it's reasonably priced. Sublimely Self Righteous, as it is, is one of the best priced beers out there (usually $5.99 in LA), and I think it's be great aged in the Templeton Rye Whiskey Barrels.

im sure itll be priced like all the other quingentie millitre beers, which means probably around 16-18 for 500ml

A black ipa in and of itself has the malt profile of a porter/stout. Sure they taste like a "black ipa" cause they are so hoppy. But once you barrel age it the hops will move to the back and the roasty dark beer qualities will shine.

I doubt it, it will likely be hoppier still than a barrel aged stout or porter. Mark my words.

Hopefully this sees national distribution. Was a damn shame that the first round of QMs that saw distribution were the worst beers they ever put out.

Doom was still hoppy after barrel... You can be damn sure SSR will be too. It has a longer best by date than Stone's IPAs so it will be just fine. A great beer to BA IMO.

I have been planning to try the original Sublimely. I only tried a Black IPA for the first time the other day, Galaxy Dark Star Black Hop Ale, which was fantastic. Next day I had a Back in Black from 21st Amendment and honestly wasn't that impressed; it wasn't roasty/malty or hoppy enough for me. So I'll pass on this expensive lmtd release unless I've gotten a chance to try the original first. More for the rest of you.

Stone SSR is a tasty black IPA, and I've had a number of Templeton Rye barrel-aged beers which were very good. But man, I don't think this combo sounds good at all.

So what's the point of making it an "IPA" then? Why not just barrel age their porter or Imperial stout?

I'd like to see them try their hand at a lager someday, or maybe a hefeweizen, but I'd be too afraid the beer would end up over-hopped or in a barrel.

Not to be rude but sticking something in barrels doesn't automatically make it better. Their barrel program has been a huge mess so I get to be skeptical of them sticking a black IPA in some barrels.
