Tried a Victory Storm King Imperial Stout tonight and I was surprised at how much hoppier it seemed than other stouts I have had recently (narwhal, old rasputin, fbs).

"hoppier" being relative of course, as I wouldn't consider it an IPA, but for being a stout, I was surprised. Is this anyone elses feeling toward this beer as well?

Yup. Storm king is ridiculously hoppy/bitter for being an impy stout. I practically love 90% of imperial stouts out there, but this one is not my cup o tea.

Storm King registers a bit like a black ipa for me. Not what I was hoping for.

I agree that it's a lot like a impy black ipa almost. Other similars are Sweetwater's Happy Ending, SN stout, and Duck Rabbit's Hoppy Bunny.

Had the India Dark Ale guidelines been around in 2002, Victory could have marketed Storm King as an India Dark Ale and people would nod their heads in agreement. It's a very hoppy beer.

There were characteristics where it tasted ale like. At times I got similar tastes which reminded me of Stone's Oaked Arrogant Bastard. Yet still stout like.

I don't like hoppy stouts or barleywines. I love the hops, but not in these beers.

Imperial India Dark Ale, that is.

Or American Double Stout, as it was once called.

Either way- yup, it's hoppy and it's big. I like it, but these days Narwhal does it better.

Almost everything Victory does is overhopped to style; ironically, the now-defunct Hop Wallop was underhopped...

Like it or not, it's fairly distinctive. I'm not sure Victory needs to put one more bourbon-barrel aged imperial stout out on the market

The one I had musta been pretty old because I thought it had a nice sweetness to match the bitterness.

I loved it. I found only one bottle and I would have bought more but I have not seen it again. I called it "vivid and impertinent" or something like that.

Concur on the hoppiness...comes across with a spicy to mouthfeel to me. I'm not really a fan of the anise either as I think its kind of overpowering. Still a worthy beer. I should age one. Had a case of ST last year and just drank it all. Imagine that :astonished:

Hmmm I had it a few weeks ago and didnt notice if it was hoppier but thats just me. I mean I kinda expect imp stouts to be a bit hoppy so maybe it was par for the course.

You say that as if you tire of barrel-aged imperial stouts... frankly, I'd love to see more of them.

What I've never seen, though, is a dry-hopped barrel-aged stout, with the hops added for the last 2-3 weeks in the barrel. Wonder if it would do anything besides muck up the beer.

let it sit for a couple of years. It turns into a nice, more "traditional" imperial stout.

And I kinda like it partly for that reason. It's differ from the other imperial stouts.

Personally one of my favorite seasonals. I am a hophead who loves a good RIS, this beer has the perfect amount of hops for me
