I think they do it like a wild ale, open vats and all. It's different every time I get it as well, and I think it's due to spontaneous fermentation.

    Tastes Belgian to me!

Port City's Porter is rated as "exceptional," and it's a local!

Arcadia's Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. It's a great beer, but a little pricey (~$8 for a 12oz). Chris from Craft Beer Temple did a bourbon barrel blind tasting with this beer, Dark Horse BA Plead the 5th, Founders KBS, Goose Island BCS, Central Waters BBS, and Bell's Black Note. Arcadia's BBA Imperial Stout was his favorite. Cheers.

I'm not in the mood to comment on Stouts but as far as Porters go I can recommend several:

    American Porters
    Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald
    Founders
    Anchor
    Sierra Nevada

    English Porters
    Fuller's London Porter
    Sam Smith's Taddy Porter
    Old Growler
    St Peter's Old Style Porter

Porters are probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite style. I love Porter.

If you can get your hands on a bottle of Mayflower Porter you will be a happy, happy person.

Just had an Evil Twin "Lil' B" strong porter - think mocha latte with a lot of alcohol - fantastic dessert beer.

Getting into stouts, you might wanna go with some sweet stouts, like Left Hand's Milk Stout, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat, and Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout from Odell.

Deschutes Black Butte Porter is another solid one.

I think North Coast Old Rasputin and Stone IRS are a couple good, go-to Russian imperial stouts. And as previously mentioned, Great Divide's Oak Aged Yeti (regular, espresso, and chocolate) are stouts that get my vote.

I see that you are from Virginia and i just had a Port City Porter last night and it was a solid brew and with you being in VA it should be a easy find hope that helps.

    Cheers
