Yeah that was all I could think he was getting at. And I totally get it (hence mixed bag comment). When I hear about some of the boutique hotels / private members clubs that some of these developers have in the works (mostly on the other side of the river, but still....) it makes me shudder. When guys who traditionally go to the hamptons tell me they’re going to the Catskills, I let out a bit of an internal sigh.

Now obviously I work in the industry, and live in Brooklyn - on the face of it I am the enemy. But this is a job to me that I just fell into. And I’m from a very rural, poor part of Scotland - been going to the Catskills whenever I can since 2007 because it feels so like home, and even in that short time it’s crazy how it’s changed.

The flip side of course is that everyone wants their “special place” to be kept relatively secret. But there were always people that came before you to whom you are the “outsider”, and you’re no more entitled than the ones that come after. Plus let’s not kid ourselves - a lot of the area is much in need of $$$$ and regeneration. So a lot of what’s happened / happening is massively beneficial. I just hope that in the long run the place is able to strike a balance and be somewhere thats accessible/enjoyable for everyone, rather than becoming North Mountain Hamptons

We went north to get out from under the high taxes (relative to the rest of the state. Property taxes are high everywhere in NY.) and just better value for a house. The house we ended up purchasing would have probably cost 1.5-2x of what we paid further south. With telecommuting become more and more the norm, it's not surprising that more and more people are doing this. I certainly wouldn't want to do this commute 5x a week albeit it's actually not much worse than my commute from Rockland was even though I'm 40 more miles north. The west side of the river has much worse options for the NYC commuter.

@cavedave makes a good point that this isn't all good especially if you are accustomed to more rural living. The suburban sprawl is mostly a Rockland/Westchester thing, but I can see it working its way up the river thanks to @rozzom and his finance bros.

The municipalities also seem to be benefiting from the influx of money. Beacon looks way different now than it did 5-10 years ago. Personally I'm not a fan of the Brooklyn brunch vibe at this point in my life, but I'd be all over that if I was in my 20s. I miss the days when HVB wasn't slammed at all times during the weekend since it's way too crowded now to bring my 2 y/o there, but can't really blame them for their success.

That area down by the water in Newburgh (Billie Joe's etc) seems to be doing really well, too.

A Newburgh renewal project similar to Beacon's is under discussion seriously and will be undertaken in the near future. And yeah, I used to do work for Bonura Hospitality who owns Billy Joe's and a lot of the waterfront you speak about, they also have big plans for upgrading Newburgh. It definitely needs it.

Heading to the area next weekend with my gf and Suarez is definitely my first stop on the list. Can’t think of many beers I’d choose over Palantine or Qualify during this time of year (or any time of year for that matter). I had the pleasure of sampling a few of their country beers at a Blind Tiger event a while back and they were all fantastic. Really looking forward to trying some bottles on site

Sorry for the confusion, guys. Wasn’t taking a shot at the area! Totally beer related. I meant that in twenty years hopefully I can get awesome beers at the store instead of having to go to specific breweries. I’m imagining a nirvana where I can go to the distributor and find all of my favorites beers in one place. Pipe dream, I know!

Patiently waiting for the hold on fills to become unshackled, but a new batch of Palatine is a victor

I get so excited when I see a Suarez on the taplist. It's so comforting, whether its a lager or a crispy little or a pils or whatever, I know it's going to be lowish ABV and huge on flavor and it makes me glad. Catch A Wave last night at Meks was so, so good, and on the happy hour list to boot. Keep doing what you're doing!

They have some suggested places here: http://www.suarezfamilybrewery.com/faq

Gaskins is great, but they don’t open until 5. I like Bubby’s for burritos.

Get a pretzel(s) they have delivered on-site and you can also bring in your own food.

When I visited Suarez, I grabbed dinner at Lil Deb's Oasis in Hudson (10-15 minutes from Suarez). Awesome meal -- I highly recommend it.

I'm going to be in Highland with my family next week and should be able to sneak out on Thursday to get to HVB and hit up Suarez on the way home to Boston on Friday. Are either of these places family friendly (7 & 8 yo kids)? They can always entertain themselves with the ipads if need be!

If I can only hit up one or the other, do people have a preference? I should be coming with a decent supply of Treehouse if people are in the mood to trade, send me a DM.

I've seen children at both breweries on every visit. That said, there's not a lot to entertain them at either so I wouldn't plan on an extended stay.

Suarez and HVB make very different beers. For my palate, I'll take Suarez any day but ymmv.

Suarez in the middle of (beautiful) farm country whereas HVB is in Beacon, which has plenty of places you could stop with your kids before or after a visit (ice cream, candy, etc.).

IMO there isn't even a choice if you have to pick between Suarez and HVB. Suarez all day, every day.

    Suarez!

And can’t speak to HVB, but the Suarezes (is that right?) have a ~3 year old who is often in the tap room playing with his toys. Plus there’s the outside area. They’re definitely family-friendly/focused
