I absolutely love the following styles: Czech Pils, Euro Dark/Pale/Strong lagers, bocks/doppelbocks, dortmunder/export lagers, german pils, and mai/helles bock.

I was wondering if my fellow lager-lovers could make some suggestions on which beers they like that fall into those categories. More importantly, which of those are widely distributed. Seems to me like it's the same old faces in those categories at my local bottle shop. Sure I love the main stays (like Celebrator or original Weihnstephaner (sp)) but I'd love to try something new.

On the plus side, this is a great time for Czech Pils: Summerfest, Lagunitas Pils, Noble Pils are all out and about.

    Thanks in advance!

Wines and More in Cranston seems to have the largest variety of imports in our area - Baltika, EKU, Wurzburger, etc. Overall, slim pickins for us lager lovers however...

    Try some Helles Lagers
    Lowenbrau

or any german one especially (Augustiner Brau Lagerbier Hell, Spaten, Westenphaner)

Of course! I always overlook that one (I think I normally stay away because of the price). I will give it a roll.

Had a Helles Bock from Victory, can't remember the name, it had a picture of a strange looking dude on it. It was phenomenal!

Awesome tip, thanks. I love Baltika. I could drink their #3 all day. I enjoy #7 as well. Where in Cranston are they?

Augustiner and Loewenbraeu aren't distributed here.

    I would reccomend:
    Koenig Pilsener
    Wuerzburger Hofbraeu
    Hofbraeu Original
    Hofbraeu Dunkel
    Ayinger Jahrhundert
    Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel
    Ettaler Dunkel
    Tyskie
    Spaten Helles
    Spaten Dunkel
    Mahrs Pilsener
    Mahrs Hell
    HAcker-Pschorr Muenchener Gold
    H-P Edelhell
    Augustiner Edelstoff
    Augustiner Dunkel
    Weihenstephaner Dunkel
    Reissdorf Koelsch
    Aecht Shlenkerla Helles
    Golden Pheasant (Can)
    Zipfer
    Hell Quoellfrisch
    Stiegl Goldbrau
Stiegl Pils (brown half liter), not green bottle
    Stiegl Grapefruit Radler
    Ciuc Premium
    Schlägl Kristall
    DAB (Can)
    Kulmbacher Edelherb Premium Pils
    Jever Pils (Fresh)
    Pikus Pils

All of these are great for summer and shouldn't be too hard to find. Obviously check the dates first all of these are only good when fresh. And I love dunkels in Sommer.

Looks like a great list, thanks.

Dunkels have never been my thing actually, not sure what it is about them but I have never enjoyed them. Are dunkels technically ales? I can't remember. Not that that would be answer as to why I don't like them (as there are many ales which I love), just curious.

It's already been said but look for Spaten brews, they're pretty widely available. I'd also try Aventinus Eisbock

No they aren't ales. Dunkels have a wide spectrum of flavors, the ones I put on this list are lighter or just easy drinkers despite being full flavor and are real thirst quenchers in the summer. Other dunkels are sweeter. At any rate I don't know how one could not like some of these dunkels, world class beers. They are basically just helles lagers with a bit more darker munich malt for color mostly.

Aventinus Eisbock is really an ale. It is Aventinus (a wheat ale) that is ice distilled. But i recommend it, my fav beer.

I don't think it is bad. And alternatives would be Zywiec or EB. The Polish lagers have a distinct flavor, while they aren't world class they are easy to put back. And why the hell would you trust a lager rating on BA?

Ehh they aren't in the class of most of the others, it is a cheap mass produced beer after all. But for the price (under 20$ a case around here) it is worthwhile, it isn't bad for what it is. Licher is another super cheap one that isn't bad.

Warsteiner always seems to get overlooked when European lagers come up. Personally, I usually get steins of them at the local Bavarian restaurant when I go. Wont blow your mind, but its a pretty good example of the style.

Great great point. I completely forgot the weizenbock is what's frozen. Technicalities aside their eisbock is a great sipper. Cheers
