"New" in quotes indicates my question.

    New Spring Seasonal Summit Twenty-One

Is this beer the same as the Ratskeller Reserve Twenty One that was released in a sample box last year?

This is replacing Maibock? Doesn't seem possible, but apparently it is. I guess The Go Box is in my future, could be a gem if Twenty-One is good.

I assume it's at least a very similar to the original from last year's Ratskeller Reserve Collection, in which case it's an outstandingly good beer and one of the best Minnesota-made IPAs you'll find on the shelves. I'll grab a pack of the latest release and report whether I think it has been dumbed down.

Yeah, I was sorry to see their Maibock become a sample box & taproom only beer, but at least it's still available (for now, at least...).

Getting rid of Mindblock? Seems legit.

If the Go Box isn't a 12 pack of Maibock with different graphics I'm going to be really sad.

This sucks if it's really the end. i will probably buy a 12 pack or two since I like Dakota Soul anyhow.

On a side note Surly Scrillionaire drinks like a Dopplebock

I'd like to try Scrillionaire if I didn't have to buy the variety pack. I'm bummed that Bent Paddle isn't making their doppelbock this year. I guess that means more Schell's Bock for me!

I agree with all your points, now I am stuck with 3 (4 with Summit 21 too) different IPA's that I don't care about but will drink anyhow.

It's also pretty sad that Surly crams that awful Xtra Citra into every mixed box. One of my frequented liquor stores many times will break up a mixed box or two and sell them as singles. Maybe I can grab a Scrillionaire that way; I'd like to try it (but not bad enough to have to suffer through 3 X's.)

But I liked the Ratskeller Reserve Twenty-One, and I like Dakota Soul, so the Summit Go Box won't be a problem for me.

Its actually a 24 pack and its only going to have this version of Twenty one IPA, Maibock and Dakota Soul (which in my opinion isnt that great of a pilsner....along with having a name glorifying North Dakota not Minnesota.

Hmmm.... as you likely know (but in case you don't) the barley used in this beer comes from Mark Stutrud's cousin's farm in North Dakota. Hence, the name.

I love Dakota Soul. Easy drinking but plenty flavorful. I'm very sad that Maibock is only available in a mix pack, but I will definitely be buying a lot of the mix pack, if I like the IPA.

Ha! I kind of felt the same way about Xtra Citra, but I had one recently, and it wasn't as bad as I'd remembered.

Yep I did know. Summit used Mark's cousins farm for barley on the now deceased Bohemian Pilsener and they advertised that it used the North Dakota source.
But being typical Summit they made an announcement about a new beer and that happened to be named after another state. They seem to miss opportunities about embracing the local scene, like naming a beer after St Paul or the neighborhood they are in even. They did have that Westy 7th but it was only an Unchained I believe and that's gone now.

I agree with that, I had one over the summer and it wasn't as offensive as I last remembered it being. Maybe they changed the recipe?

Has anyone seen Summit's The Go Box with maibock anywhere yet? Seems like the one with Cranky Woodsman is all I can find.

It is actually a pretty good IPA. Almost did not buy a 6-pack because it stated "juicy" on the packaging. I think I will be buying more in the future.

Twenty One is quite good, but getting rid of Maibock other than in a 24-pack variety box simply sucks ass. And Utepils isn't canning Springbock like they did last year either.

Anyone had Beaver Island's Maibock? Might have to try that now.

Also, Hofbrau Maibock is tasty, affordable and should be out in a month or so.

The Summit variety boxes I've bought in the past have all been 12 packs. I wonder why this one is 24... the picture only shows 3 beers, so does that mean it contains 8 of each?

Also, I bought a 6 pack of Twenty One.... it IS quite tasty!

I also see they are putting Twenty One in their IPA 12-pack, along with Sága and Slugfest, and a new box-exclusive IPA - Elderflower.

Yeah, it is one of the Go Box packs which are 3 beers of 8 each.

And I just bought the IPA box today on my lunch break, and I will try the Elderflower tonight. I already had bought a 6-pack of Twenty One, but it is really good so I don't mind the extras now. And I always enjoy Saga. I feel Summit excels at easy drinking yet flavorful IPAs. They never blow your socks off, but always on point.

Beaver Island usually does well in competitions. I really like it. Malty. Had a few cans with carbonation issues last year but that isn't the beers fault I don't think.

I'm drinking Twenty-One tonight, and it's coming pretty close to blowing my socks off. It's really good. It's not juicy at all, contra the box's claim (but that's de rigueur in contemporary IPA marketing), but rather a quite bitter, malty, unapologetically Midwest IPA. I think it's one of the best Minnesota-made IPAs to hit liquor stores in years and a strong contender for the best beer Summit ever has produced.

Summit always has been 5 to 10 years behind the trends, and, in 2020, that makes it one of the best breweries in the state. I do shudder to think of the neon pink, cartoon-covered 16-ounce cans of Sabro/Cashmere/Lotus-cryo-double-dry-hopped passionfruit mango guava imperial milkshake Dreamsicle Starburst tropical kettle sour hazy IPA that it'll be pushing in 2027.

Can someone explain to me why Summit would produce a variety pack with 24 cans with only 3 different kinds of beers (that you can also buy individually in 6 packs)? If you don't like one you have 7 more cans. Do variety packs sell so well for parties that buyers don't really care of the mix?

Price per oz marketing for parties, etc, I would guess.

Yeah, they market it as for parties. And oftentimes one of the three is exclusive to the box. Maibock... sniff sniff

I'll be happy once I find one of these cases. Maybe two, since I need to give the Maibock a proper sendoff.

Just found Lakefront Maibock. Not terrible but not good either. Lacks the clean lager look and tastes muddled as well. Almost like a honey ale or something...

Summit's 24-pack variety boxes are sold at big-box/membership stores like Costco and Sam's Club. There's also a Beer Finder on Summit's website.

Which lets you search for "Go Box". There's been two (Maibock containing one, Cranky Woodsman containing one), and the beer finder doesn't differentiate between the two.
