Referees Charge Brewery With Minor Infraction, Send Beer to Penalty Box

ST. PAUL, Minn. (October 10, 2017) – Heads up, Folks. Summit Brewing Co.’s newest beer is a bruiser. Cross-checking, throwing elbows, talking trash, instigating fights — Summit High Sticke Alt is a powerful German-style ale ready to knock down the competition on and off the ice.

Debuting in late October on draft and packaged only inside the Summit Penalty Box — a new variety pack of twelve 12-oz. bottles — High Sticke Alt pours a deep copper color and features aromas of stone fruit and toffee. With malt flavors of caramel and biscuit, plus a slap shot of hop spice and assertive bitterness, High Sticke offers bold fruit flavors and cold, crisp drinkability. It’s pretty agile on skates, too.

Inspired by the Altbier style famous to Germany’s historic Westphalia region and the city of Düsseldorf, High Sticke Alt pays homage to a brewing style that goes back centuries — “alt” is literally German for old, referring to the beer’s method of fermentation. And “Sticke,” on the other hand, isn’t just a clever penalty pun. Translated once again from German, it means secret, and it’s a nod to the special-occasion seasonal beers brewers would make once upon a time for themselves and their favorite customers. Whatever gets you through a losing streak, right?

Higher in alcohol than a traditional Altbier, a substantial body of German malt provides the foundation for a big hop load and boosts the ABV to 7.5%. Perhaps a little strong if you’re on Zamboni duty, but it may be just what you need when it’s time to hit the warming house.

“Summit has a proud association with Altbier,” says Head Brewer Damian McConn. “Before our Oktoberfest was created, a traditional Altbier was Summit’s fall seasonal. This iteration, with its significant spicy and floral hop notes, will offer remarkable drinkability and smoothness from a longer period of cold maturation.”

Lace up your skates for your first taste of Summit High Sticke Alt at the Summit Beer Hall and Patio on Thursday, October 19. Find it later in October on draft and in 12-oz. bottles only inside the Penalty Box. Available for a limited time, the variety pack also features Summit Extra Pale Ale, Horizon Red IPA, and our returning Winter Ale.

This is good to see. I miss their old Alt beer. I'll be checking it out. Sampler sounds solid.

I wish this wasn't confined to a mix 12pk for off-premise and that I could buy it on its own

Now I will be positive. I look forward to trying out the new ALT. I remember the old one but don't remember what it tasted like. The 12 pack I will take. The EPA is good to revisit once in a while. It is the beer to blame for turning me into IPA Hop head. It all started with this beer back in about 1987. Red: I like it usually tastes best with the new harvest fresher hops it seems . Winter: I drink it every winter for a long time now.
