"The Greatest Beer Run Ever"

I read the story about the original "run," here's hoping this flick will do it justice.

Nice! Bout time we get something other then Smokey and the Bandit, Strange Brew and Beer Fest...a real heroic feel good story

 

very much looking forward to this, of course after I take the wife to see Don't Worry Darling (she's a diehard Harry Styles fan) this weekend

 

Been on my “to read” list for a while. Will have to read it quick as I like to read a book before I see a movie.

 

Also add Beer League with Artie Lange. That was a classic as well. All beer themed movies to date are entertaining to some degree IMO.

 

I love that movie but have yet to meet anyone else who knows it or enjoys it. Nice to meet you @bubseymour. I usually try and watch once a year each summer, didn't end up getting to it this year. They drink brooklyn brewery in the bar (bachelor party) scene I believe.

It’s a cult classic for sure. If you like low brow humor (Adam Sandler movies, Always Sunny in Philly) you’ll probably like Beer League.

 

And from these beer centric movies you can learn some new things, like that a box can be used as a hat:

 

BIL and myself were in Greensboro NC for a funeral years ago. We managed to escape for a few and hit Bestway. And bought WAY too much beer. As we were walking out, we both got USAA notifications asking us if these were our purchases.

Best beer run ever.

Over 50,000 of my peers died in Vietnam, many came home damaged. I won't be watching the Run. But you know different strokes for different folks. Carry on.

 

Having read the (true) story, I don't think this film will discredit the soldiers in any way. In fact, I think it's out to honor them.

 

For what it is worth… My impression of the book is that the whole point of the trip was to show respect and gratitude to the folks who served during a time when all of them were being vilified. The book made no distinction regarding why they served, just that they were people too, and at least one other person cared about them.

 

P. Ballantine & Sons sent beer to Vietnam twice ('65 & '67) - I have not researched other US breweries as extensively as I have Ballantine, so wouldn't be surprised if other brewers did the same.

Granted, the two women at the Ballantine forklift did not delivery the beer personally and forty stickin' bucks got them in papers? Your beer dollar went further in 1967. (So, was Ballantine annoyed when the photo didn't clearly show the Ballantine Beer logos on the flats to the right in the pic.)

A few other "beer in Vietnam" articles attached, too. Interesting US brewing industry trivia - San Miguel in the Philippines once controlled Kansas City, MO's Geo. Muehlebach Brewing Co. By the Vietnam era, that brewery (built in the post-Repeal era of the late 1930s) was being operated by Schlitz.

 

...the book was certainly entertaining (though certainly not great literature)...I see the movie is generally being panned by critics, but they're probably all wine snobs anyway...

...I passed my copy on to @champ103...I don't know if he's read it yet or what his impression of the story is...

 

Probably "beer" in the title set a tone for them that they couldn't shake.

 

...let's not forget the Three Stooges' beer shorts...

...too bad you feel that way...it is a true story about a Marine vet showing support for fellow service and community members - a true sense of brotherhood and fidelity, something that is rarely seen then or now...read the book if you don't want to see the movie and see if your opinion changes about the story...

...a decent story, a quick read...but I suppose you've already got your reading pace and topic desirability list pretty well locked up...but, yes, I think you'll get a kick out of it whenever you get around to it...

Yeah I never read that book but the cover pic and title were hilarious just to look at.

 

You are making it out like the book/movie is disrespectful or something. And while I appreciate what many servicemen gave, the moral superiority in this post is a bad look.

 

I think he was just pointing out historical facts: our Vietnam Veterans were largely vilified. While I know less about Vietnam than our other wars, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying we probably should not have been there. 50,000+ young American Citizens died, most likely needlessly. Our protests should not have been directed at the rank and file and many of them are bitter over how they were received upon their return home. I think this is what the poster was alluding to.

I wasn’t born yet but I think I’m pretty close on my facts.
Anyone who has the guts to serve I the military, especially during war time, at the bare minimum deserves to not be vilified.
Thank you for your service sir. I’m sorry for the friends and compatriots you lost. I’d like to think if I was alive back then I would have felt the gratitude that I feel now for all of this country’s Veterans.

Or at least the day after when I walked from the train station to Grant Park in a crowd of vets where I asked them about their parade experiences -- very moving.

 

I need to clear up a few misconceptions. I am not a Veteran. We do have a daughter who is career Army however that we are very proud of. My peers are my childhood friends and classmates who I grew up with. In the 60's and early 70's all males grew up with the yoke of the draft over our heads. Same like me had a high draft number from the first draft lottery, others not so lucky. We grew up working class, not as the popular song said "A Fortunate Son". A few of my peers died in combat or accidents in Vietnam. A few came back with drug and or alcohol problems that shortened their life. Contrary to the media view of returning Vets, we welcomed our chums and classmates with open arms and love. The Vets of that time were vilified, but that was not my experience in my circle of friends. I need to read the book "The greatest beer run ever". I misinterpreted the trailer I saw that made it out to be a comedy to me. Peace

 

The movie can't help but have some comedy to it, just from the ridiculousness of the story line, but I have read the book and there is serious drama in there. I'll be watching tonight and will know how closely the movie follows the book.

 

I watched the movie last night (126 minutes), so here's a little bit of a review. The movie follows the book fairly well from what I can remember of the book. There were a couple scenes that seemed new, but maybe my memory is sketchy. The movie won't win any awards, but the story line was good enough to attract a couple of (semi?) major actors, Russell Crowe and Bill Murray.

There was plenty of drama in the war scenes (no judgement on the special effects), and some tender moments of people interactions. There is a good amount of respect for and against the GIs and the war itself, so it's a matter of personal reflection about how the viewer perceives the purpose behind the war, which likely will have an effect on the enjoyment of the movie. I think it was done in good taste and is respectful of the GIs who went thru it.

At the end they show photos of the 5 main characters as they look today.

Disclosure: I spent a year over there in a rear echelon role, and only came close to fighting activity one night and had to spend a couple hours in a 10x10 bomb shelter in my skivvies with about 25 other guys. So I'm not one to judge how the movie treats the front line activity.

 

His buddy came over to get him out of the house. Told him, "Let's go fishing". So Artie told his mom where he was going. She looked at him and told him, "You're too fat to fish"!

That's where the title came from...lol.
