I kinda wish they separated out the BA versions and focused on just regular stouts, but that could just be me.

Wow, many different kinds of stouts here. I scanned the list. I'm done.

Agree, Sunny Side Up is a great stout.

Hill Farmstead’s Beyond Good and Evil was amazing. When I was there in 2022, I waffled on whether to pay $10 for a small oz pour but glad I did.

We have stouts getting made in Md, just not very many stellar ones. Midnight Run is doing some good things in the high ABV styles (stouts and others).

Most of them are TOO STRONG for me. Delaware has Dogfish Head 17.3%? Lower alcohol winners in Alabama., Kans., Miss, Neb., ND, SD, W.Va., and WY. I guess I'll have to go to flyover country for my stout supplies.

I've had a few on this list, plus variants of a few others. Overall, I really can't find anything to complain about, except that my to-do list is quite a bit longer and a helluva lot more expensive now. Bring 'em on!

How many beers would be left on that list if we eliminated all the ones that were either barrel aged, contain lactose, or are meant to replicate a desert?

If you go to the Top 100 for each state, there isn't a big variance in terms of BA score between the 1-100 ranked beer.

I'd say a better way of compiling a broad list would be to use the top number of ratings (say 800 minimum) over each of the stout styles to get greater diversity in terms of ABV and regular vs. BA vs. Adjuncts.

If you wanted to remain state focused, take the stout with the most ratings within each state's Top 100 with 1 or more reviews (not just ticks) over the past twelve months.

A good number of posters here and a bigger percentage of beer drinkers beyond have a better chance to find and enjoy beers on either lists (the state list for travelers or traders since it's hard to cover 50 beyond your own and some regional / national / adjacent states).

They are all stouts. I get your point, but I think we all know that many people like those big beers, so that’s why they’re sold and that’s why they’re on the list. Personally, I love barrel aged stouts, but pastry stouts, not so much.

I definitely don’t have the expertise and experience to say what is and isn’t a stout. I’m just interested in how many, let’s call them “traditional” stouts, have fallen out of favor among craft drinkers.

Coconut Medianoche is tops in CO. Not my personal favorite, but that sounds accurate based upon what most people enjoy at the moment. I know some folks prefer some of the other Medianoche variations more, but they're limited enough that the # of reviews = much lower. I'd still rather have a normal Yeti than the super sweet adjunct stouts that are all the rage.

Marty, we need to go back to the year 2015 when CBS was still sought after. We will stand in line at the brewery and share beers such as Hopslam and KBS while we await our 2 4 pack allotments.

Haven't lived in the Baltimore area since 2012, but back then the best stouts in the state were likely both from Heavy Seas... The siren noire and peg leg. They were OK.

    Assume things are better now?

IMHO, there are plenty of stouts that are better than BCBS from Illinois....

Coincidentally I bought Hopslam and CBS at Wegmans (impulse buys) after work today. Funny how things change.

Could be but none are as well known or available. These lists are always based upon what's consumed the most.

Gonna be very controversial. In Oregon they got it right
Double Stack is a great stout..fancy and hated by us resin/dank IPA folks. But it's delicious.
    But still Grape Lotion!

It definitely is. I'll be interested to see how long the 2023 CBS sits on shelves and/or continues to be restocked.
