I will start by admitting I have never had this beer. And the reason is strictly price. I have passed on it numerous times as I always see it at $22-$25 per 350 ml or whatever that bottle size is. Smaller than 22 oz, more than 12 oz. it seems outrageous when compared to other widely distributed BA Imperial Stouts like BSBS, Abyss, etc. And a confusing price point considering how reasonably priced the non-BA version of Old Rasputin is at $10 for 4 12 oz bottles. It is more than 4x the price of the non-BA which is well above the norm.

What am I missing here? Is it really that good and worth the price tag? Or do others find it to be greatly overpriced as well?

I did the same as you and passed - way too much for barrel aging a beer that is normally $10 for a 4 pack.
It comes in 500ml bottles, so it is about a 5-6 times mark up over the base beer.

It is very, very good, but for some reason also unknown to me, priced disproportionately high to the other top-shelf barrel aged stouts---BCBS, Parabola, etc...It's more on par with Avery's barrel-aged beers, for instance, on a per ounce basis--which are also very good, but very pricey. I don't suspect, given North Coast's excellent price for regular Rasputin (and their other beers), that it's simple price-gouging. More likely, it seems to me, that they haven't achieved the necessary economy of scale or fine-tuned their barrel program enough to offer BA Rasputin at a lower price. Still, I think if you really like Old Raspy, the BA version is good enough to buy one bottle of each year. But not more. Save the rest of your beer budget for the regular version, and other, less costly, barrel-aged brews.

Agree, paid 23$ for a bottle that, honestly, let me down given the name and such.

It's awesome, but at $22, which is about the average I see it for, I really don't even consider buying it more than once a year at the most.

As others have said... it's awesome. Grab one and enjoy, consider all the base Old Rasputin you've bought (at great prices) as a discount on the barrel aged version.

Probably, if not more - priced like Clout Stout or something like that. I was just there for a few weeks visiting my family (I am an expat) and I cried at the price of things...

I've had BA Old Rasputin XV, XVI, and XVII, it's good, it usually goes fast in my area such that if I see it, I buy it because it could go the same day. Is it worth $25 out the door? Not sure, it definitely doesn't disappoint but I think the price effects my perspective of the beer. Hopefully Firestone Walker continues to provide Parabola 22 ounce for around $16.
My opinion is that it's worth one purchase a year but I'm a sucker, I usually buy 2, drink one, cellar one.

Never seen it on shelf, but I think I'll just stick the regular great Old Raspy. I'll admit I do like a BA Stout from time to time and have some BCBS, Parabola, Central Waters in my basement, but for me the added flavor is not worth the price delta very often with these. I passed on SN BA Narwhal for same reason this month and just bought a reg Narwhal and Bell's Expedition and still came out ahead

$19.99 at my local store. I know it is pricy, but it is one of my all time favorites so I feel it is worth it. Generally speaking, I have no problem paying a premium for a product I consider exceptional and that goes for everything, not just beer.

Usually sits on shelves here in Omaha for months compared to other 'Limited' releases that move within a day. Had the chance to have a 2-year vertical last year at a beer festival, and frankly, I still think that the BA versions are immensely overpriced for their quality (I honestly thought Old Rasputin was better than either of the past two years of BA Old Rasputin) and that Old Rasputin in general really doesn't hold its own outside of the fact that it's year-round. I get that people like it, but I don't really see the draw; comparable to Deschutes Obsidian Stout for me.

Don't hold your breath on Parabola - in Chicago the Firestone Anniversary beer went up over $5 compared to last year, and I heard Parabola was going to be the same - I hope it doesn't but I am expecting it to come in at @ 21-22

I can never justify making that purchase when Abraxas is $18. There's no way this beer is better than Abraxas. And yea last time I got Parabola it was $18 as well.

You can't really compare the two considering the spice profile in Abraxas...

It is good, and to be honest, it is probably priced correctly.
It sits on shelves for about 2-3 months, no lines, no online release, no exclusive tickets to events to have the chance to buy one.
I personally do not buy it because of the price and I think the barrel aged and sour beer market is absurd, but the market seems to support prices like that just fine.

I'm expecting a $2-3 price increase on Parabola. Still, at $20 a bomber it's definitely worth the price. Once a beer passes the $20 mark I begin to have serious suspicions about the value.

I was at a Bevmo in San Diego last week. I got to talking with a clerk about some special releases that they had in the back. He mentioned that they had BAOR XXVII so I told him to throw a bottle in with my order. I hadn't even thought to ask what the price was. Imagine my surprise when it rang up at $24.99. :grimacing:
