Minor nit: It's Devil (not Devil's) Anse. "Devil Anse" Hatfield was patriarch of the Hatfield clan, of Hatfield-McCoy fame. Devil Anse IPA is the quintessential West Virginia beer. My only beer-related nit to pick with this list is 120 Minute. I'm not too familiar with Delaware beers besides DFH, but is this really the best you've got? I thought 60 Minute was much better. I'd call 120 Minute an oddity rather than a standout, but maybe that's just me.
It does seem odd. At least on BA, 90 minute has a higher average rating with nearly twice as many reviews. I mean, I guess based solely on the hype, maybe 120 minute gets the nod over 90 minute? That being said, there are a lot of selections on this list I find a bit puzzling.
Minnesota: Surly Furious is on tap at your local church or daycare center and at damn near every bar. But IMHO Steel Toe Size 7 IPA is a much better beer in many ways.
I mean, Perpetual's fine for what it is, and it is a classic, but there are many better IPAs in Pennsylvania.
Looking over the list, I just assumed that availability must be a major factor in determining each state's "standout" ipa. However, I then saw that Fiddlehead ipa was listed as the standout IPA in Vermont, instead of Sip of Sunshine. At least on BA, SoS has far more reviews, has a much higher average rating, and is widely available throughout the state. I'm pretty sure it easily outsells Fiddlehead as well. So I got nothing. I have no idea how the author came up with her list.
Nice to have lists though! re Furious, I order it sometimes esp if I see a good number of pours of it being had. It's not sitting in the lines and is flowing. It is a damn good Ale. Yet ST Size 7 seems to have a bit more depth and slightly more of a twist for lack of a better term towards "true-to-style".
To me... "Standout" suggests an IPA from a 2nd-tier/unheard-of brewery compared to the S-tier/1st-tier breweries of the state.. or maybe a low-end IPA from any brewery in the state. Personally, I'm fine VA-wise with Triple Crossing Falcon Smash.
I dunno. At least in MA Fiddlehead is everywhere. So is Sip though. Pretty sure 120 minute isn’t the best selling IPA in Delaware….. I do have to say I agree with the MA pick of Julius.
I’m ok with Julius 120 min is too extreme. I like 90min, some may go with 60min (I wonder if 75min has been discontinued)
Given this statement from the article, shouldn't the list of beers be regularly available within each state? I've not had Halogen Farm from Hop Butcher and do not have an issue with someone selecting it as their favorite IPA from IL but this beer appears to be released irregularly (once a year, if that).
Just freely mixing IPAs, DIPAs, and TIPAs? That'd be OK if it were a "best boxer pound for pound" thing, but it just looks like they didn't think about it too much.
Columbus Brewing Bodhi is a fine IPA (DIPA actually), and I recently enjoyed some - it is a solid choice - is it the best "IPA" made in Ohio - all pretty subjective like such lists.... As others have mentioned - there are quite a few great IPAs made here....here are some that may top Bodhi, depending on your own tastes... Great Lakes Chillwave / Lake Erie Monster Fat Heads Head Hunter / Alpha Ambush CBC - Creeper / regular IPA Rhinegeist Truth Masthead IPA. and many others BrewKettle White Rajah Hoof Hearted Brewing / Musk of the Minotaur to name only a few!
I have had it a lot - even poured it at the Cleveland Beer Fest at the CBC booth some years back - is it the "BEST" in Ohio? Not sure I would say that.....most days
I'm not sure that the Tasting table site knows much about what is best. Right below their article on the best IPAs per state, they have their Bourbon rankings. I couldn't disagree more if I tried.
The wife and I spent roughly a week in the Portland Maine/Vermont Waterbury area back in April 2017. I don't recall seeing Fiddlehead too many plsces, but SoS was everywhere (especially in the Stowe and Waterbury areas). I'm a huge fan of SoS, so could not have been happier. To have that good an ipa so readily available was just mind blowing to me.
