With the weather warming up and more drinking to occur outdoors (camping, poolside, doing yardwork, etc) the appeal of cans rises this time of year, unfortunately the supply does not, I'm finding.

On BA I've witnessed enthusiasm for the increase in can offerings on the one hand and, on the other, recall an article posted within the last 1/2 year or so that exposed a can shortage in the craft industry. Not sure what you're seeing in your neck of the woods, but it seems to me California is feeling the effects of a can shortage if one truly exists. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Trader Joe's is the one reliable place I can get cans of Anderson Valley Hop Ottin, Barney Flats, and an Anderson Valley seasonal.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is widely available canned, I'm glad to say. Pizza Port too.

Besides that, it's pretty slim pickin'. Two of my favorite breweries' cans are nowhere to be found - Boston Beer Co. (far as I know they do can but distro must be an East coast thing) and Anchor (whether or not they can I'm unaware).

Interested to hear thoughts on can hunting and if you see more of an abundance where you live. Cheers!

There are a lot of breweries that can in my distro. Surly, TG, Oskar blues, tallgrass etc. I haven't noticed anything that would make me think there's a can shortage.

No can shortage here - more local breweries are adopting cans.

No shortage at all here. I do wish there were more brews that found their ways into cans this time of year.
I have a lot of love for the cans where the whole top comes off, I certainly don't see that enough.

Could this "can shortage" be just another marketing ploy?
Is InBev trying to corner the can market?
Or are the can manufacturers truly not able to produce as many as are needed?

For the answers to these and other important questions, stay tuned to this website.

Lots of cans in Michigan, especially from small breweries that are just now starting to distribute. My only gripe is that many of these new cans don't have the artwork printed directly on the aluminium. They have a thin plastic sleeve that appears to be heat shrunk onto the can. Very minor complaint, just seems a little cheesy

I have heard from reliable sources that the availability of 16 oz cans is low as far as what the breweries can get their hands on.

By can shortage, I recall reading that Ball and the other can manufacturers could not keep up with demand, thus a can shortage prevents more beers being available in cans. However, I have not heard anything like that since then.

However, if by 'can shortage' means a shortage of additional breweries beginning to can their beers, these breweries could have been stymied because of the empty can shortage, but adding canning equipment takes time too, if that is the only option available to a brewery. However, here in Michigan there is a mobile canning service (I believe they also do work for some Indiana breweries) that has allowed some small breweries to start canning without the capital layout for buying the equipment. We're seeing a nice variety from these small breweries as well as at least one large brewery (Bell's) releasing more of their beers in cans too.

So come to Michigan and enjoy your cans of beer on the numerous beaches and golf courses. We love vacationers dropping a bunch of their money in our economy.

I was just in a place that has 'em stacked to the ceiling in multiple locations; and it seems like every week there's five new choices.

Love cans, especially 16 Oz cans. Store better, easier to take golfing, etc. And cans labeling is so improved...not that it matters but still cool.

I have also read a few articles on certain breweries having difficulty finding enough cans but i think it was the particular vendors they were using. When I see a company like Bells canning Hopslam as opposed to bottles and their national distribution, I had my doubts on any can shortage. I also see many other breweries canning that haven't in the past so I am skeptical as to any market shortage. Cans are the rage - can graphics is an added selling point even when the beer isn't so I'm sure can manufacturers are stepping it up...
