Has anyone had Double Nickle's beer ever since they jumped on the haze-train? Online chatter seems like mixed reviews but I'm thinking about heading over tomorrow to grab their latest can release...

I just picked up their Vienna Lager and thought is was fantastic. Will be trying a few more from them shortly.

It's a little late now, I wasn't sure how to weigh in earlier, but I think to a certain extent the new beers from Double Nickel have been hit or miss - but mostly hits! I'm not sure how many were haze beers though. And now I've forgotten the name, I think it was "autopilot", I REALLY liked that one, I thought they nailed it. And, at one time their Pilsner was kick-ass, really one of the best I've had, and better than a lot of what I've sampled fresh in Europe. I haven't seen it around lately though but I don't get out much any more.

So @Streaky, did you go? What did you get?

On that note, I haven't been to Tonewood in a really long time, months, and I used to go every other week or so. What are they up to?

Tonewood is pretty solid. Worth the trip

River Horse is the only one of those three I may have been harsh on.

Right. All three are properly rated IMO.

Is that the AP or the Coaches poll you are referring to? All kidding aside, I don't see a lot of positive comments about any of those 3 breweries at least on BA. Dark City was a laughing stock on here until Yale Terrace came along and Cricket Hill has been around a long time with very little fanfare or discussion. River Horse is probably the most highly regarded of those 3 but i still don't hear a lot of good things about them. So i am not sure about being overrated when nobody's saying good things about you to begin with.

Have they gotten better since the whole infection debacle with Bolero Snort?

    I
Mostly agree. I really enjoy Angry Erik, looking forward to seeing how their new facility will turn out. Good beer and good people at that brewery.

Haven't had enough from Cricket or Dark City to comment, but I'll give a soft disagree on River Horse. I really like a a handful of their beers and keep them in rotation during the appropriate season (Oatmeal Milk Stout, Summer Blonde, and Chocolate Porter) and haven't had enough of their newer IPAs to compare to the rest of the market. Sort of feel like they've been playing catch-up with a lot of the breweries to emerge over the last couple of years. On the other hand, hippos are cool.

Need to also disagree on Cricket Hill & RiverHorse. They may not get a ton of fanfare but most of the beers I have from them are pretty solid. I also keep some RH in constant rotation. I think not focusing on hazy juice bombs, pastry stouts, and the new trend may keep them not on most people's lists.

I do agree that Dark City is not overrated but IMO deserves no rating at all. Their beers constantly stink to me.

The NJ Facebook groups have taken to crapping all over River Horse to a degree I didn't think was possible for a brewery that never really steps on anyone's toes. I think it's because some employee of theirs was in these groups and people came ot not like her. I dunno, don't really try to follow the drama that closely.

I haven't been to Tonewood for a while, I'm due for another trip across the river soon.
Do they have cans for sale pretty much all the time at this point?

I don't make it down there often enough (live 40mis away) to know if they have cans regularly, but I do see their stuff in stores.

Went to both Pt. Pleasant breweries (Last Wave and Frye) over the weekend. Frye was just ok, I was more impressed with Last Wave. Their greenroom ipa was great; a nice bitter piney ipa which I love. Also really liked their brown ale which seems like a rare style to see lately but is nice to enjoy in the fall.

Yeah, you would think that the stuff that sees regular distribution would also be available at the brewery, at the very least. Plus, they make crowlers there, too .

Always wished they’d have stuff readily available in SJ. Maybe someday.
